Ateizme CevapAnswering Atheism

Answering Atheism

Atheism says there is no God. The agnostic says, “We can’t know whether God exists.” But “we can’t know” is a claim too, and it needs reasons; even the well-known atheist philosopher Graham Oppy admits this. On this page we test both views with reason and evidence. First we ask whether God exists, then whether Jesus really rose from the dead, and last we look at the objections people raise most often.*

I. BölümPart I

Tanrı Var mı?Does God Exist?

1Her şey nereden geldi?Where Did Everything Come From?

Imagine you’re walking in a forest and find a shiny ball on the ground. You ask, “Where did this come from?” If your friend said, “Nowhere, it’s just there,” you’d think he was joking. However big the ball is, it needs an explanation. The universe is the same.

You, me, the earth, the stars: none of us had to exist. If your parents had never met, you wouldn’t be here. We can’t explain things that didn’t have to exist by pointing to something else that didn’t have to exist. In the end we have to reach a being that exists by itself and needs nothing else. As Cliffe Knechtle says: nothing comes from nothing.

Some say, “The universe has always been here.” But that doesn’t make the question go away. Line up an endless row of train cars, and without an engine none of them moves. Even if the universe has always existed, we can still ask why it exists at all.

This first being can’t be matter, because matter changes and could have been different. It is outside time too, because time begins with change. And since it could choose to create a universe, it is like a mind, a person. A mind of unlimited power, outside time and matter: this is the being people call God.

“Then who made God?”

The argument doesn’t say “everything has a maker.” It says “things that begin, change or might not have existed have a cause.” God didn’t begin, doesn’t change and has always existed. If everything had a cause, the chain of causes would never end, and nothing would exist at all. The chain has to stop somewhere. The atheist stops it at the universe; the Christian stops it at God.

2Evren hayata göre ayarlanmışA Universe Set Up for Life

The universe has settings that are tuned just right for life to exist. One of them is the number that sets how fast the universe expands. If it were a tiny bit bigger, the universe would have flown apart, with no stars and no planets. If it were a tiny bit smaller, the universe would have collapsed on itself right after it began. “A tiny bit” here means a difference with 120 zeros after the decimal point.

The physicist Luke Barnes worked out the odds of the universe turning out fit for life by chance. They are far lower than rolling a die 70 times and getting a six every time. If you saw that happen, you wouldn’t say, “Just luck”; you’d think the die was loaded.

On top of that, the laws of nature fit what’s in the universe, just as a game’s rules fit its own pieces. The rules of chess don’t fit backgammon pieces. In our universe, the rules and the pieces fit each other. The universe is also very well suited to being studied. If God exists, none of this is surprising: the One who made us wants us to get to know the world.

“Maybe there are countless universes”

This is the most common reply: there are countless universes, and we just happen to be in one that suits life. But it doesn’t solve the problem:

  • A mechanism that makes so many universes would itself need to be finely tuned. The problem just moves back a step.
  • In such a pile of universes, lone brains that pop into existence for a moment and vanish would be far more common than orderly, long-lasting worlds like ours. Then you would most likely be one of those brains, and you couldn’t trust your own eyes.
  • “If things were different, we wouldn’t be here to ask” explains nothing. If all fifty members of a firing squad missed, the man still standing wouldn’t say, “I shouldn’t be surprised”; he’d think they missed on purpose.

3Bilinç, vicdan ve akılConsciousness, Conscience and Reason

Consciousness

Your brain is soft grey tissue. Somehow the electricity and chemistry inside it let you feel the taste of coffee or the sadness of a song. That link could have been different. Pain and pleasure could have been swapped: you would enjoy putting your hand in a fire, but still pull it away. Since your behaviour wouldn’t change, evolution wouldn’t notice. Evolution picks what we do, not what we feel inside. This is the question that first drew Joe Schmid toward God: can it be chance that our inner life is so orderly?

Conscience

Torturing a baby for fun is wrong. It would be wrong even if everyone thought otherwise. Even the well-known atheist philosopher J. L. Mackie admitted that a morality like this was unlikely to arise without God. On atheism, our conscience grew not because it shows us what is right, but because it helped us survive. Then we have no reason to trust it. If God exists, conscience is a voice from the source of all goodness.

Reason itself

When Pat Flynn was an atheist, he noticed this: if there is nothing but matter, our thoughts are just chemical events in the brain. Then there is no free will either, and blaming a murderer makes as little sense as blaming a hurricane. Worse still: if our minds were shaped to survive rather than to find the truth, why trust the mind that says “atheism is true”? If God exists, we have a reason to trust our minds: the One who made us wants us to know the truth.

Beauty

The world could have been a grey, dull place. Instead it is full of beauty, from galaxies to the veins of a leaf, and there are beings who can see it. Even the philosopher Paul Draper, who doesn’t believe in God, admits that a beautiful world is more to be expected if God exists.

Tanrı Konuştu mu? İsa ve DirilişHas God Spoken? Jesus and the Resurrection

4İncillere güvenebilir miyiz? Can We Trust the Gospels?

We’ve seen that God exists. The next question is: has God spoken to us? Christianity says God spoke in Jesus, and that Jesus rose from the dead. To look into this, let’s start with the sources: the Gospels.

Written while the eyewitnesses were alive

The Gospels were written 40 to 60 years after Jesus’ death, while people who knew Him were still alive. Our best sources on Alexander the Great were written 300 to 400 years after his death, and nobody doubts his life story. No other book from the ancient world has as many old copies as the Gospels.

We know who wrote them

Some say the Gospels went around without names and the authors were added later. But every old copy we have gives the same names: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. And Luke says he wrote his Gospel by asking people who had seen the events from the start (Luke 1:1-4).

We know about Jesus from outside the Gospels too

The Jewish historian Josephus mentions Jesus and His brother James. The Roman historian Tacitus writes that Jesus was executed under Pontius Pilate. No serious historian denies that Jesus lived and died on a cross.

“But the Gospels don’t agree”

Atheists point out that the Gospels differ on details like the hour of Jesus’ death or His last words. It’s normal for four witnesses to the same event to tell the details differently. Courts get suspicious when statements match word for word, because they may have been rehearsed. What matters is that they agree on the main point: Jesus was crucified and buried, on the third day the tomb was found empty, and His disciples saw Him alive. Made-up stories aren’t this plain, either. In a fake gospel from the second century, Jesus walks out of the tomb as a giant, followed by a talking cross. Mark just tells us, simply, that the women ran away afraid.

5İsa gerçekten dirildi mi?Did Jesus Really Rise?

Pavlus, Korintlilere yazdığı mektupta kendisine öğretilen kısa bir inanç metnini aktarır: Mesih öldü, gömüldü, üçüncü gün dirildi; Petrus’a, sonra on iki öğrenciye, sonra aynı anda beş yüzden fazla kişiye göründü (1. Korintliler 15:3-8).

Alex O’Connor, Mormon Kilisesi’nin kurucusu Joseph Smith’in altın levhalarını gördüğünü söyleyen tanıkları örnek verir.

The historian Gary Habermas looks only at facts that sceptical historians accept too. Most historians who study this, the atheist Bart Ehrman among them, agree that:

  • Jesus died on the cross.
  • Soon after, His disciples truly believed they had seen Him alive, some alone and some in groups.
  • Paul, who persecuted Christians, became a Christian because he believed he had seen Jesus.
  • James, Jesus’ brother, who hadn’t believed in Him, came to believe too.

About two thirds of historians also accept that the tomb was found empty. So the question is: what explains all this best?

A record very close to the events

In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul passes on a short statement of faith he had been taught: Christ died, was buried and rose on the third day; He appeared to Peter, then to the Twelve, then to more than five hundred people at once (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). He adds that most of the five hundred are still alive; in other words, “If you don’t believe it, go and ask them.” Paul most likely learned this when he spent two weeks in Jerusalem with Peter and James, a few years after the crucifixion (Galatians 1:18). That is far too short a time for a legend to grow.

Could they have been seeing things?

According to the historian Michael Licona, this doesn’t work. Only about seven per cent of grieving people say they saw the person they lost. Seeing things is like dreaming: two people don’t have the same dream, and a crowd doesn’t see the same vision. Besides, Paul wasn’t grieving; he was an enemy persecuting Christians. And James didn’t believe.

Could they have been lying?

People will die for a lie they think is true. But they don’t die for something they know is a lie. The disciples knew whether or not they had seen Jesus. Peter, Paul and James were killed for saying so. As Licona puts it: liars make poor martyrs.

Could the body have been stolen?

Grave robbers back then took the valuable burial cloths and left the body. In the Gospels, the cloths are still there and the body is gone (John 20:6-7). The Jewish leaders didn’t deny the tomb was empty either; they only said the body had been stolen (Matthew 28:13). And the first people to find the empty tomb were women. In those days, a woman’s word counted for little in court. Anyone making up the story wouldn’t have picked women as witnesses.

“Other religions have witnesses like this too”

Alex O’Connor points to the people who said they saw the golden plates of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon Church. Trent Horn shows the difference: Smith picked these witnesses himself and was trying to convince them, and one of them had money in the venture. Jesus’ disciples, on the other hand, had lost hope; their leader was dead and nobody expected anything. And Mormonism has no Paul, no enemy who changed sides.

What does the resurrection show?

The Jews expected the dead to rise at the end of the world, all together. Saying that one man had risen in the middle of history wasn’t something anyone would want to make up. The resurrection also backs up what Jesus said about Himself. Jesus did something only God can do: He forgave sins (Mark 2:5-7). At His trial He said He was the one the prophet Daniel saw, coming with the clouds of heaven (Mark 14:61-64; Daniel 7:13-14). For this He was accused of insulting God and sentenced to death. God raised Him from the dead, as if to say: “He was telling the truth.”

6Tanrı bugün de konuşuyorGod Still Speaks Today

  • Mark Goring on iki, on üç yaşlarında inancını kaybetti. Her gece diz çöküp “Tanrım, eğer varsan, göster bana. Ben hazırım” diye dua etti. Bir gece yıllardır süren korkusunun yerini derin bir huzur aldı. Bugün Kanada’da rahip.

Üçü de aynı şeyi söylüyor: Tanrı’yı samimi bir kalple arayan onu bulur (Matta 7:7-8).

Trent Horn puts it this way: if Jesus rose, it’s no surprise that His mother would appear to people who believe in Him. What brought Joe Schmid out of atheism was less philosophy than documented miracles. For him it was simple: if a cut-off leg grows back, we have to fit our ideas to the facts.

Miracles with witnesses and records

  • Calanda (1640): In Spain, a farmer’s amputated leg came back overnight two years later. Dozens of people, including the surgeons who cut it off, gave sworn statements.
  • Fatima (1917): Three shepherd children announced a miracle three months ahead. That day tens of thousands of people saw a light like the sun spinning in the sky. Among them was a reporter from a newspaper hostile to the Church.
  • Lanciano (8th century): At Mass, bread turned into flesh and wine into blood. When they were tested in 1970, the flesh was human heart muscle and the blood was human blood; there was no preservative.
  • Padre Pio (1887-1968): The wounds in his hands and feet bled for fifty years, yet they never healed and never became infected. On the day he died they closed without a scar.
  • Zeitoun (1968-1971): In Cairo, a figure of a woman made of light appeared on a church dome for three years. The first to see her were Muslim workers; on some nights hundreds of thousands watched.

For the details, and answers to the sceptics, see our Miracles page. You can find an excuse for each event on its own. But the excuses needed to explain all of them together become harder to believe than the miracles themselves.

The experience of millions

All through history, millions of people have said they met God. If someone tells us something and we have no reason to doubt them, it makes sense to believe them; most of what we know about history works this way. Even the atheist philosopher Graham Oppy admits that what brings people to believe is usually not arguments but experiences like these.

Atheists who came to believe

  • Joe Schmid was an atheist and agnostic for ten years and made hundreds of hours of videos against God. First, consciousness and fine-tuning drew him toward God; then months of studying miracles brought him back to the Church.
  • Pat Flynn became an atheist reading Nietzsche. It bothered him that atheism left morality and free will with nothing to stand on. One Christmas Eve, when the priest lifted up the bread at Mass, he knew this was where he belonged.
  • Mark Goring lost his faith at twelve or thirteen. Every night he knelt and prayed, “God, if You’re real, show me. I’m in.” One night the fear he’d felt for years gave way to a deep peace. Today he is a priest in Canada.

All three say the same thing: whoever looks for God with an honest heart finds Him (Matthew 7:7-8).

7Kötülük ve Tanrı’nın sessizliğiEvil and God’s Silence

Bu, ateistlerin en güçlü sorusudur. Joe Schmid’i Kilise’den uzaklaştıran, milyonlarca yıl boyunca birbirini parçalayan hayvanlardı.

This is the atheist’s strongest question. What pushed Joe Schmid away from the Church was the thought of animals tearing each other apart for millions of years. Trent Horn also says it’s the question he finds hardest. Without brushing it aside, here are a few things to consider.

Calling something “evil” needs a standard

To call something “evil,” you have to know what “good” is. As Cliffe Knechtle says: if there is no God, there is no problem of evil either; the world just is what it is. The fact that evil makes us angry shows we believe in a real standard of good.

Some good things can’t exist without pain

There’s no courage without danger, no compassion without suffering, no forgiveness without a wrong. If God gave us free will, He also let us misuse it. And it’s no surprise that we can’t see the reason for everything God does. A chess master’s move can look foolish and still serve a plan we can’t see.

Pain before humans existed

Some atheists point out that animals suffered for millions of years before humans came along, so that pain can’t be blamed on human sin. But pain is a warning system: it helps animals escape danger. A creature that feels no pain won’t live long. Trent Horn asks: if all humans left the earth, would you destroy it because the animals left behind would suffer? Most of us wouldn’t, because it’s good that animals exist, even with their pain.

Why doesn’t God speak more clearly?

Joe Schmid and the Catholic philosopher Ethan Muse give the same answer: God gives enough evidence to make belief reasonable, but not so much that doubt becomes impossible. That way, faith is a response of love, not something forced. Evidence doesn’t always lead to faith anyway. In a story Jesus told, Abraham says: “If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead” (Luke 16:31). For Knechtle, the real obstacle is often not evidence but pride. Accepting God means kneeling before Him.

Without God, only the evil is left

As Trent Horn puts it: “If I threw God out of the picture, all I’d be left with is the horrid evils,” with no justice and no hope. Christianity doesn’t tell of a God who keeps His distance from pain. It tells of a God who took pain on Himself on the cross.

8Bilim, Kutsal Kitap ve dinlerScience, the Bible and Religions

An article in Diyanet İlmî Dergi, the scholarly journal of Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs, lists why young people in Turkey become atheists: the wish to live without any rules, religion being presented as if it were the enemy of science, religion being used for money and politics, and groups that read religious texts word for word and put violence first. None of these shows that God doesn’t exist. But all of them should be taken seriously.

Science and faith aren’t rivals

Science tells us how the universe works, not why it exists. The fine-tuning we saw above was discovered by science itself. Most of the pioneers of modern science were Christians who saw the world as the work of an intelligent Creator: Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Newton. And the first person to propose the Big Bang was Georges Lemaître, a Belgian Catholic priest and physicist.

Genesis isn’t a science book

Some atheists say the Book of Genesis paints an ancient picture of the universe. But the Church has never asked us to read the Bible like a science textbook. As early as the fifth century, St Augustine warned that Christians who set the Bible against what science clearly shows drive people away from the faith. The Catechism teaches that the six days of creation are told in a symbolic way (CCC 337). Genesis tells us not how the universe works, but who made it and why it is good. The Church also accepts that God may have created living things through evolution, while every human soul comes directly from God (CCC 366).

Evil done in the name of religion

People who use religion for money or power don’t prove that religion is false. The fact that people print fake money shows that real money is worth something. The article’s author also says that exploiters are no reason to reject religion. And Jesus saved His harshest words for those who used religion to show off (Matthew 23:27-28).

“With so many religions, which one is true?”

People say, “If you’d been born in Saudi Arabia, you’d be a Muslim.” Maybe. But where a belief comes from doesn’t show whether it’s true. If the same atheist had been born in North Korea, he’d think differently too. Having many religions doesn’t mean they’re all wrong; we can look into which one is true. First we look at whether God exists, then at the resurrection of Jesus. For what comes next, see our Why We’re Catholic and Answering Islam pages. The Church teaches that people who don’t know Christ through no fault of their own, but look for God with an honest heart, can also be saved (CCC 847).

Kapıyı AralamakOpening the Door

Rahip Mark Goring’in tavsiyesi basittir.

Evidence matters, but on its own it doesn’t carry anyone into faith. As Pat Flynn says, neither losing his faith nor finding it again was purely a matter of the intellect. Joe Schmid, too, resisted for months after he was convinced that God exists. Changing his life, giving up ideas he had defended for years, admitting in public that he had been wrong: none of it was easy.

Fr Mark Goring’s advice is simple. First, pray, even if you don’t believe: “God, if You’re real, show Yourself to me. I’m in.” Jesus says: “When you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you” (Matthew 6:6). Second, read a good book: one of the Gospels, or the life of a saint. Third, let go of what you know to be wrong. It is hard to see God in the dark.

The Bible says: “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). Wherever you are on the road, the Church’s door is open to you. If you have questions, write to us or visit your nearest church.
