İslam’a CevapAnswering Islam
Answering Islam
Islam claims that the Qur’an is God’s final, uncorrupted word, and that Muhammad is the last of the prophets and the finest example for mankind. On this page we test those claims not from the outside, but by Islam’s own sources: the Qur’an, the authentic (sahih) hadith collections such as Bukhari and Muslim, and Muslim historians such as Ibn Ishaq, al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir. The verdict is clear: Islam cannot survive the testimony of its own sources.*

Kitap: Kur’an Kendi ÖlçüsüyleThe Book: The Qur’an by Its Own Standard
1İslam İkilemiThe Islamic Dilemma
Müslümanlara çocukluktan beri şu öğretilir: Tevrat ve İncil bozuldu, Kur’an ise hiç değişmeden korundu. Ama Kur’an böyle söylemez.
- Kur’an 2:41, Yahudilere: “Yanınızda olanı doğrulayıcı olarak indirdiğime iman edin.”
- Kur’an 5:43: “İçinde Allah’ın hükmü bulunan Tevrat yanlarındayken seni nasıl hakem yaparlar?” Yani Yahudilerin Muhammed’e ihtiyacı yok; Tevrat onlara yeter.
- Kur’an 5:47: “İncil ehli, Allah’ın onda indirdiğiyle hükmetsin. Allah’ın indirdiğiyle hükmetmeyenler yoldan çıkanların ta kendileridir.”
- Kur’an 5:68: “Ey Kitap ehli! Tevrat’ı, İncil’i ve Rabbinizden size indirileni ayakta tutmadıkça hiçbir şey üzerinde değilsiniz.”
- Kur’an 10:94: “Sana indirdiğimizden şüphe içindeysen, senden önce Kitap’ı okuyanlara sor.”
- Kur’an 6:115: “Onun sözlerini değiştirebilecek hiç kimse yoktur.” Aynı söz Kur’an 6:34; 10:64; 18:27 ayetlerinde de geçer.
Kur’an burada yedinci yüzyılda elde bulunan Tevrat’ı kendisiyle aynı seviyeye koyar.
Muhammed Tevrat’a ne dedi?
Her Müslüman, Kur’an’ı en iyi Muhammed’in yorumladığını kabul eder. Peki Muhammed, Yahudilerin elindeki Tevrat’a nasıl davrandı?
Tevrat getirildi. Minderi altından çekip Tevrat’ı onun üzerine koydu ve ‘Sana ve seni indirene inandım’ dedi.”
Ebu Davud 4449 (el-Albani: hasen)
Muhammed’in minderin üstüne koyduğu kitap, binlerce yıl önce inip kaybolmuş bir Tevrat değildi. Medineli Yahudilerin elindeki nüshaydı; Muhammed ona elleriyle dokundu.
(Tirmizi 2653). Muhammed’in gözünde onların sorunu kitaplarının bozulması değildi. Kitapları ellerindeydi, ama yine de yollarını kaybetmişlerdi.
Muhammed’i peygamber olduğuna ilk ikna eden kişi, Hatice’nin Hristiyan amcaoğlu Varaka’ydı. Buhari’ye göre Varaka İncil’den İbranice yazardı (Buhari 3). Yani İncil ortadaydı; Mekke’de bile okunuyordu.
Kur’an, İncil’den bir mesel bile aktarır: Muhammed’in yanındakilerin “İncil’deki örneği, filizini çıkarmış, onu güçlendirmiş, kalınlaşmış ve gövdesi üzerine dikilmiş bir ekin gibidir” (Kur’an 48:29). Demek ki Kur’an’ın “İncil” dediği kitap, bugün bizim okuduğumuz İncil’dir.
İkilem şudur ve bir çıkış yolu yoktur:
- Tevrat ve İncil, Kur’an’ın dediği gibi Tanrı’nın korunmuş sözüyse Kur’an yanlıştır. Çünkü Kur’an bu kitapların en temel öğretilerini inkâr eder: İsa’nın Tanrı’nın Oğlu olduğunu, çarmıhta ölüp dirildiğini ve tek Tanrı’nın Baba, Oğul ve Kutsal Ruh olduğunu.
- Tevrat ve İncil bozulmuşsa Kur’an yine yanlıştır.
Veremez, çünkü cevap Kur’an’da yok.
Şunu da açıkça söyleyelim: İkilem, Tevrat’ın ve İncil’in şeriatının Müslümanları bağladığını iddia etmez. Kur’an’a göre her ümmete ayrı bir yol verilmiştir (Kur’an 5:48). Kur’an’ın kendi hükümlerini koyması, onayladığı kitapların bozulduğunu göstermez.
Kur’an’ın koyduğu test
Yani Kur’an, Muhammed’i sınamak için önceki kitapları hakem gösterir.
Bazı müfessirler, Kur’an 10:94’teki “Kitap’ı okuyanlar”ın Müslüman olmuş Yahudiler ve Hristiyanlar olduğunu söyler. Bu da sonucu değiştirmez. Onlar da ellerindeki Tevrat’ı ve İncil’i okuyordu. Muhammed’in şüphesini giderecek kaynak yine bu kitaplardı.
Korintliler 15:3-4). Kur’an ise onun öldürülmediğini ve çarmıha gerilmediğini söyler (Kur’an 4:157).
Aynı Eski Ahit’i birlikte nasıl bozmuş olabilirler?
2. “Muhammed bilerek seçti”
Bazı davetçiler, Kur’an’ın Kutsal Kitap’ın tamamını değil, yalnızca işine gelen kısımlarını onayladığını söyler. Üstelik Kur’an, Müslümanlara bu vahiyler arasında ayrım yapmamalarını emreder (Kur’an 3:84). Şunu da düşünün: “Kitaplarınızı onaylıyorum ama yalnızca bana uyan kısımlarını” diyen her tarikat lideri, her kitabı onaylamış olur. Kur’an’ın Yahudilere ve Hristiyanlara sunduğu en büyük delil, onların kitaplarını onaylamasıdır. Seçerek yapılan bir onay ise delil sayılmaz.
3. “Kur’an’ın Tevrat’ı sizin Tevrat’ınız değil”
Kur’an, Yahudilerin ve Hristiyanların Muhammed’e inanması için iki büyük delil gösterir: Muhammed onların kitaplarını doğrular, onların kitapları da Muhammed’i haber verir (Kur’an 7:157; 2:146). Kitaplar ortada yoksa iki delil de çöker. Ayrıca Kur’an, Allah’ın İsa’nın izleyicilerini kıyamete kadar inkârcıların üstünde tutacağını vaat eder (Kur’an 3:55) ve bu vaadin yerine geldiğini söyler: “İnananları düşmanlarına karşı destekledik ve üstün geldiler” (Kur’an 61:14). Tarihte üstün gelen Hristiyanlar, elinde bugünkü İncil’ler bulunan Kilise’dir. İsa’nın gerçek kitabı hiçbir Hristiyan’ın elinde kalmadıysa, Allah vaadini tutamamış demektir.
4. “Allah’ın sözleri, vaatleri demektir”
Bazıları, “Allah’ın sözlerini değiştirebilecek yoktur” ayetlerinin (Kur’an 6:34; 6:115) kitaplardan değil, Allah’ın vaatlerinden söz ettiğini söyler. Oysa Kur’an 18:27 aynı ifadeyi açıkça kitap için kullanır: “Rabbinin Kitabı’ndan sana vahyedileni oku; O’nun sözlerini değiştirebilecek kimse yoktur.” Vaat yorumu da işe yaramaz. Allah, Tevrat’ı ve İncil’i “insanlara yol gösterici” olarak indirdiğini söyler (Kur’an 3:4).
5. “Kur’an tahrifi söylüyor”
Müslümanlar genellikle üç ayet gösterir. Kur’an 4:46, bazı Yahudilerin “sözleri yerlerinden kaydırdığını” ve dillerini eğip büktüğünü söyler. Ama hemen sonraki ayet aynı insanlara “yanınızdakini doğrulayıcı olarak indirdiğimize iman edin” der (Kur’an 4:47). Suçlanan şey kitapları değil, dilleridir. Kur’an 3:78 bunu açıkça söyler: “Kitap’ı dilleriyle eğip bükerler ki onu Kitap’tan sanasınız.”
Aynı surede Yahudilere, Kur’an’ın “yanlarındakini doğruladığı” iki kez hatırlatılır (Kur’an 2:41; 2:91).
6. “İsa da Kur’an da hüküm kaldırdı”
Kur’an’a göre İsa, Tevrat’ı doğrularken bazı yasakları kaldırdı (Kur’an 3:50). İkilem, Tevrat’ın ve İncil’in hükümlerinin Müslümanları bağladığını söylemez. Söylediği şey, bu kitapların Allah’ın korunmuş sözü olduğudur. Kur’an da tam olarak bunu söyler.
Muslims are taught from childhood that the Torah and the Gospel were corrupted, while the Qur’an was preserved without any change. The problem is that the Qur’an does not say so. The Qur’an confirms the books that Jews and Christians had in their hands in its own day as the word of God, commands them to judge by these books, and even sends Muhammad to consult them if he is in doubt.
- Qur’an 3:3-4: “He has sent down to you the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He sent down the Torah and the Gospel before, as guidance for mankind.”
- Qur’an 2:41, to the Jews: “Believe in what I have sent down, confirming what is with you.” What is with them is not a book lost in the past, but the book in their hands.
- Qur’an 5:43: “But how is it that they come to you for judgment while they have the Torah, in which is the judgment of Allah?” The Jews do not need Muhammad; the Torah is enough.
- Qur’an 5:47: “Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah has sent down in it. Whoever does not judge by what Allah has sent down, it is they who are the rebellious.”
- Qur’an 5:68: “O People of the Book, you stand on nothing until you uphold the Torah, the Gospel and what has been sent down to you from your Lord.”
- Qur’an 10:94: “If you are in doubt about what We have sent down to you, ask those who have been reading the Book before you.”
- Qur’an 6:115: “None can change His words.” The same is repeated in Qur’an 6:34; 10:64; 18:27.
- Qur’an 3:84: Muslims are commanded to say: “We believe in what was given to Moses and Jesus and the prophets from their Lord; we make no distinction between any of them.” The same command stands in Qur’an 2:136. To say that every revelation was corrupted except one is the greatest distinction of all.
- Qur’an 28:49: The Meccans who dismissed the Torah and the Qur’an as “two works of magic supporting each other” are challenged: “Then bring a book from Allah that gives better guidance than these two, and I will follow it.” The Torah of the seventh century is weighed on the same scale as the Qur’an.
What did Muhammad say to the Torah?
Every Muslim accepts that Muhammad is the best interpreter of the Qur’an. How did Muhammad himself treat the book in their hands? The Jews of Medina called him to judge a case:
“They placed a cushion for the Messenger of Allah and he sat on it, then he said, ‘Bring me the Torah.’ It was brought. He withdrew the cushion from beneath him, placed the Torah on it and said, ‘I believed in you and in Him who revealed you.’”
Abu Dawud 4449 (al-Albani: hasan)
This is not a book revealed millennia earlier and then lost; it is the copy in the hands of the Jews of Medina, the copy Muhammad touched. In another hadith Muhammad says that knowledge will be taken away from his community. A companion objects: “We recite the Qur’an, and our women and children recite it; how will knowledge be taken from us?” Muhammad answers: “Are not the Torah and the Gospel with the Jews and the Christians? What good has it done them?” (Tirmidhi 2653). Muhammad’s example is not people with corrupted books, but people who went astray while holding sound books in their hands.
The first person to convince Muhammad that he was a prophet was Waraqa, Khadija’s Christian cousin, who according to Bukhari used to write from the Gospel in Hebrew (Bukhari 3). The Gospel was there; it was being read even in Mecca.
The Qur’an even quotes a parable from the Gospel. The likeness of Muhammad’s companions “in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its shoots and strengthens them, so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks” (Qur’an 48:29). This is Jesus’s parable of the seed that grows by itself, and it is found only in the Gospel of Mark (Mark 4:26-29). Many Muslim translations point the reader to Mark in their footnote to this verse. The book the Qur’an calls “the Gospel” is the Gospel we read.
This is the dilemma, and there is no way out:
- If the Torah and the Gospel are the preserved word of God, as the Qur’an says, then the Qur’an is false. For it contradicts them by denying that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died on the cross and rose again, and that the one God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
- If the Torah and the Gospel are corrupted, the Qur’an is still false. For it confirms corrupted books as the word of God, and on top of that says no one can change God’s words.
This dilemma, made widely known by David Wood and Sam Shamoun, is the question that troubles Muslim preachers most today. In a debate published for young people who have begun to doubt their religion, one Muslim preacher asked openly: “Do you think the imam at your local mosque can answer the Islamic dilemma?” He cannot, because the answer is not in the Qur’an.
One point needs to be clear. The dilemma does not claim that the law of the Torah and the Gospel binds Muslims. According to the Qur’an each community was given its own way (Qur’an 5:48), and the Qur’an imposes its own rulings, such as the jizya, on the People of the Book. The dilemma rests on something else: these books are the standard of truth, and they bind Jews and Christians. That the Qur’an lays down rulings of its own does not show that the books it confirms were corrupted.
The test the Qur’an sets
According to Qur’an 3:81, Allah took a covenant from the prophets: if a messenger came confirming what was with them, they would believe in him and help him. How would they know the messenger was genuine? By his confirming what was in their hands. If someone came contradicting what was in their hands, then by that covenant he was no messenger. The Qur’an also says that Jews and Christians find Muhammad “written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel” (Qur’an 7:157). So the Qur’an itself names the earlier books as Muhammad’s judge.
Some commentators say that “those who have been reading the Book” in Qur’an 10:94 are Jews and Christians who had become Muslims. That does not help either: they too were reading the Torah and the Gospel they had in hand, and the source Muhammad was to consult for his doubt was still those books.
The judge has ruled. According to the Gospel, Jesus died on the cross and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:3-4); the Qur’an says he was neither killed nor crucified (Qur’an 4:157). By the Qur’an’s own test, Muhammad fails. On this point we are doing what the Qur’an says: as people of the Gospel, we judge by the Gospel (Qur’an 5:47). The verdict is clear.
The escape routes
Faced with the dilemma, Muslim preachers have been looking for a way out for years, and each of them tries a different door. The same picture appears in every one of these debates: the Christian reads the words of Allah and His prophet, while the preacher takes refuge in commentators who lived centuries after those words. David Wood sums it up as a debate between “Team Allah” and “Team Dawah”. Let us try the doors one by one.
1. “It was corrupted after Muhammad”
The most common answer is this: the Torah and the Gospel were intact in Muhammad’s time and were corrupted later. This answer does not make the Muslim’s task easier; it ends it. For we have manuscripts written centuries before Muhammad: the Dead Sea Scrolls (3rd century BC to 1st century AD), the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament (3rd to 1st centuries BC), and the Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus, which contain the whole Bible (4th century). Muhammad was born in 570. The book he confirmed is the book we read today.
One more question: for centuries Jews and Christians were rivals. How did they corrupt the same Old Testament together? Had either side changed the text, the other would have exposed it at once. Today the Hebrew text in the hands of both communities is the same. Of course the manuscripts have small differences; but none of them leads to a Jesus who did not die on the cross, did not rise, and was not the Son of God. What Islam needs is a massive corruption that changes the core beliefs, and no trace of such a corruption exists in a single copy.
2. “Muhammad picked and chose”
Some preachers argue that the Qur’an confirms not the whole Bible but only the parts that suit it. The Qur’an itself answers this idea: “Do you believe in part of the Book and disbelieve in part? What is the recompense of those among you who do that, but disgrace in the life of this world; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest punishment” (Qur’an 2:85). What is more, the Qur’an commands Muslims to make no distinction between these revelations (Qur’an 3:84). And consider this: by saying “I confirm your books, but only the parts that agree with me”, any cult leader can confirm any book. The Qur’an’s greatest argument to Jews and Christians is that it confirms their books; a selective confirmation is no argument at all.
3. “The Qur’an’s Torah is not your Torah”
This is the newest escape: the Torah and the Gospel that the Qur’an confirms are the books Allah sent down to Moses and Jesus, and they have nothing to do with the books we have today. One preacher took this all the way in a debate with David Wood: the Torah of Moses was lost, revealed again to Jesus, lost again together with the Gospel, reappeared in seventh-century Medina, was confirmed by Muhammad, and then vanished again without a trace. There is not a single manuscript, translation or quotation of these books. That is not history; that is “trust me”.
This escape also destroys Islam’s own evidence. The two great arguments the Qur’an gives Jews and Christians for believing in Muhammad are these: Muhammad confirms their books, and their books foretell Muhammad (Qur’an 7:157; 2:146). If the books do not exist, both arguments collapse. The Qur’an also promises that Allah will keep the followers of Jesus above the unbelievers until the Day of Resurrection (Qur’an 3:55), and says that He did so: “We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant” (Qur’an 61:14). The Christians who prevailed in history are the Church that held the Gospels we have today. If Jesus’s true book remained in no Christian’s hands, Allah failed to keep His promise.
4. “Allah’s words means His promises”
Some say that the verses “none can change the words of Allah” (Qur’an 6:34; 6:115) speak not of books but of Allah’s promises. Yet Qur’an 18:27 uses the same words plainly of the book: “Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord; there is none who can change His words.” And the promise reading does not help either: Allah says He sent down the Torah and the Gospel “as guidance for mankind” (Qur’an 3:4). If those books were corrupted and lost, that promise was not kept.
5. “The Qur’an speaks of corruption”
Muslims usually point to three verses. Qur’an 4:46 says some Jews “distort words from their places” and twist their tongues; the very next verse tells the same people, “Believe in what We have sent down, confirming what is with you” (Qur’an 4:47). It is their tongues that are accused, not their books. Qur’an 3:78 says so plainly: “they twist the Book with their tongues so that you may think it is from the Book.” Qur’an 5:13-15 says they forgot a portion and concealed much of the Book; what is concealed has not ceased to exist. Qur’an 2:79 condemns those who write a book with their own hands and say “This is from Allah”; to condemn forgers is not to say that the Torah is gone. In the same surah the Jews are twice reminded that the Qur’an “confirms what is with them” (Qur’an 2:41; 2:91).
Bukhari understands it the same way. In the Book of Tawhid of his Sahih he writes: “They distort, that is, they alter. But no one can remove a single word of any of Allah’s books; they interpret it contrary to its meaning.” Ibn Abbas, whom Muslims often quote, says: “Why do you ask the People of the Book about anything? They changed their scripture” (Bukhari 7363). But Allah tells Muhammad: “If you are in doubt, ask those who have been reading the Book before you” (Qur’an 10:94). When a companion’s words clash with Allah’s words, which will the Muslim follow? Ibn Hazm, who turned corruption into a systematic claim, lived in the 11th century, and Ibn Taymiyya in the 14th. The preachers defend not what the Qur’an says, but what scholars said centuries later.
6. “Jesus and the Qur’an both abrogated laws”
According to the Qur’an, Jesus confirmed the Torah while lifting some of its prohibitions (Qur’an 3:50), and the Qur’an says it abrogates some of its own verses. True; but lifting a law does not mean the book that contains it was corrupted. For Muslims the abrogated verses of the Qur’an are still the word of Allah. The dilemma does not say that the laws of the Torah and the Gospel bind Muslims; it says that these books are Allah’s preserved word. And that is exactly what the Qur’an says.
2“Harfi Harfine Korundu” EfsanesiThe Myth of Perfect Preservation
Milyonlarca Müslüman imanını tek bir iddiaya bağlar: Kur’an, Muhammed’e indiği günden bugüne tek bir harfi, tek bir noktası bile değişmeden korundu. İslam’ın kendi kaynakları bu iddiayı yedi ayrı yoldan çürütür.
1. Ayşe’nin kayıp ayeti
Müslim’in sahih hadis derlemesinde Muhammed’in eşi Ayşe şöyle der:
“Kur’an’da, belli on emzirmenin evliliği haram kıldığı indirilmişti. Sonra bu, belli beş emzirmeyle kaldırıldı. Allah’ın Resulü vefat ettiğinde bu, Kur’an’dan okunanlar arasındaydı.”
2. Unutulan sure
Muhammed’in sahabelerinden Ebu Musa el-Eşari, Basra’daki Kur’an okuyucularına şöyle dedi: “Uzunlukta ve sertlikte Tevbe suresine benzeyen bir sure okurduk.
3. Yedi harf: Ömer ile Hişam
Ömer, Hişam bin Hakim’in Furkan suresini kendisine öğretilenden farklı okuduğunu duydu.
4. Derleme: tek kişide bulunan ayetler
Muhammed öldüğünde Kur’an, iki kapak arasında toplanmış bir kitap değildi. Yemame savaşında Kur’an’ı ezbere bilenlerin çoğu öldürülünce Ömer endişelendi ve Ebu Bekir’den Kur’an’ı bir araya toplamasını istedi. Ebu Bekir önce şöyle cevap verdi: “Resulullah’ın yapmadığı bir şeyi nasıl yaparım?” Sonunda görev Zeyd bin Sabit’e verildi.
Zeyd, Kur’an’ı hurma dallarından, yassı taşlardan ve insanların hafızasından topladı.
5. Osman’ın ateşi
Muhammed’in ölümünden yaklaşık yirmi yıl sonra halife Osman, Kur’an’ın farklı biçimlerde okunduğunu gördü. Bir nüsha hazırlattı ve bunu vilayetlere gönderdi. Geri kalan bütün Kur’an metinlerinin, ister tek bir sayfa ister tam bir nüsha olsun, yakılmasını emretti (Buhari 4987). Aralarında hiçbir fark yoksa neden yakıldılar? Çünkü farklı Kur’anlar vardı. Osman birini seçti, ötekileri ateşe verdi. Buna ilahi koruma denmez; buna devlet eliyle tek tip metin dayatmak denir.
6. Bugün bile tek bir Kur’an yok
Bir örnek verelim: Kur’an 37:12. İki ayrı anlam, iki ayrı Kur’an demektir.
“Benzerini getirin”: Ömer’in ayetleri
Kur’an, eşsiz olmasını Tanrı’dan geldiğinin kanıtı sayar ve meydan okur: Onun gibi bir sure getirin (Kur’an 2:23; 10:38), on sure getirin (Kur’an 11:13), bu Kur’an’ın benzerini getirin (Kur’an 17:88), “onun gibi bir söz getirsinler” (Kur’an 52:34).
‘Ey Allah’ın Resulü, keşke İbrahim’in makamını namaz yeri edinsek’ dedim; ‘İbrahim’in makamını namaz yeri edinin’ ayeti indi.
Buhari 402
Bu üç ayet şunlardır: Kur’an 2:125; 33:53; 66:5. Önce Ömer söyledi, sonra Kur’an aynı şeyi tekrarladı. “Benzerini getiremezsiniz” diyen bir kitabın içinde, bir insanın sözleri ayet olmuştur.
Müslümana iki seçenek kalır:
- Ömer bir peygamberdi ve vahiy alıyordu. Oysa Kur’an’a göre Muhammed peygamberlerin sonuncusudur (Kur’an 33:40).
Meydan okuma, Kur’an’ın aynısını değil, benzerini getirmekti. Ömer benzerini getirdi. Hem de Muhammed hayattayken ve üç kez.
Millions of Muslims hang their faith on a single claim: from the moment it came down to Muhammad until today, not one letter, not one dot of the Qur’an has changed. Islam’s own sources refute this claim in seven separate ways.
1. Aisha’s lost verse
In Muslim’s authentic collection, Muhammad’s wife Aisha says:
“It had been sent down in the Qur’an that ten clear sucklings make marriage unlawful. Then this was replaced by five clear sucklings. When the Messenger of Allah died, it was among what was recited of the Qur’an.”
Muslim 1452a
Aisha says it plainly: when Muhammad died, this verse was Qur’an and was being recited. Today it is in no Qur’an, no mosque, no manuscript. So Aisha’s Qur’an was different from yours. The Muslim has two roads: either Aisha, “the mother of the believers”, was wrong, or the Qur’an was not preserved letter for letter. There is no third road.
Where did the verse go? In a report in Ibn Majah, Aisha tells that too: “The verse of stoning and of breastfeeding an adult ten times was revealed, and the sheet was with me under my pillow. When the Messenger of Allah died and we were preoccupied with his death, a tame sheep came in and ate it” (Ibn Majah 1944).
Nor is this suckling business a footnote. Again according to Muslim, when a woman named Sahla said her husband was uneasy about the grown man Salim coming in and out of their home, Muhammad told her: “Suckle him.” When she asked, “How can I suckle him, when he is a grown man?”, Muhammad smiled and said: “I know that he is a grown man” (Muslim 1453a). This is what stands written in the sources of the religion presented as God’s final and perfect revelation.
2. The forgotten surah
Abu Musa al-Ash’ari, one of Muhammad’s companions, told the Qur’an reciters of Basra: “We used to recite a surah which resembled Bara’at (al-Tawba) in length and severity. I have forgotten it, except that I remember this from it: ‘If the son of Adam had two valleys full of riches, he would long for a third…’” (Muslim 1050). That sentence is not in today’s Qur’an. A surah as long as one of the Qur’an’s longest was lost along with a companion’s memory.
3. The seven letters: Umar and Hisham
Umar heard Hisham ibn Hakim reciting Surat al-Furqan in ways different from how he had been taught it. He barely restrained himself until the prayer was over, then seized him by his collar and dragged him to Muhammad. Muhammad had both of them recite and said to each, “It was revealed like this”; the Qur’an, he said, was revealed in “seven letters” (Bukhari 4992). Both men were from Quraysh; the issue was not dialect but the words being recited. To this day Muslim scholars cannot agree on what the “seven letters” were, and they offer dozens of different explanations.
4. The compilation: verses found with one man
When Muhammad died, the Qur’an was not a book gathered between two covers. When many of those who knew the Qur’an by heart were killed at the battle of Yamama, Umar grew afraid and asked Abu Bakr to collect it. Abu Bakr’s first answer was: “How can I do something the Messenger of Allah did not do?” The task was given to Zayd ibn Thabit. Zayd gathered the Qur’an from palm stalks, thin white stones and people’s memories, and found the last verses of Surat al-Tawba (9:128-129) with only one man, Abu Khuzayma (Bukhari 4986). He also found a verse of Surat al-Ahzab with only Khuzayma ibn Thabit; while the compilers looked for two witnesses to a verse, his lone testimony was accepted because Muhammad had once counted his witness as equal to that of two men (Bukhari 2807). God’s letter-perfect word had come to depend on the memories of men killed in battle and of a single man.
5. Uthman’s fire
About twenty years after Muhammad’s death, the caliph Uthman, seeing that the Qur’an was being recited in different forms, had one copy prepared, sent it to the provinces and ordered every other Qur’anic text, whether loose pages or whole copies, to be burned (Bukhari 4987). If nothing was different, why burn them? There were different Qur’ans; Uthman chose one and threw the rest into the fire. That is not divine preservation. That is standardization by the state.
6. Even today there is no single Qur’an
The most widely printed Qur’an in the world today is the Hafs text standardized in Cairo in 1924 (the Hafs transmission of Asim’s reading). In Morocco, Algeria and West Africa, however, the Warsh text is read. Beside these there are other Arabic texts too, such as the Qalun, Duri and Khalaf transmissions. These are not translations; they are all Arabic, and they differ from one another in letters, words and meaning.
One example: Qur’an 37:12. The Hafs text reads: “No, you wonder, while they mock”; the one who wonders is Muhammad. In the readings of Hamza, al-Kisa’i and Khalaf, the same verse reads: “No, I wonder”; the one who wonders is Allah. Muhammad is not Allah. So which one wondered? Two different meanings, two different Qur’ans.
When Avery showed a Moroccan Muslim two Qur’ans side by side on a live stream, the Muslim pointed to the Hafs text, the most common in the Muslim world, and said: “This is not the correct Qur’an.” If there were a single Qur’an, no such choice could be made.
7. The manuscripts
Among the manuscripts found in 1972 in the Great Mosque of Sanaa, in Yemen, is one of the oldest known copies of the Qur’an. It is a palimpsest: beneath the upper text lies an erased, older Qur’anic text, and that lower text differs from today’s text in its words and phrasing. Two different Qur’ans on the same page. The Birmingham leaves that Muslims so often point to are only two leaves; they do not prove that a whole book was preserved letter for letter.
How the Bible was preserved
Compare. The Bible never had a caliph who gathered every copy and burned all but one text. From the first centuries on, thousands of copies in Greek, Latin, Syriac, Coptic and Armenian were made in communities that knew nothing of one another. That is why no one could change the text on his own; when a scribe miscopied, the other copies give it away. In the Qur’an, by contrast, after Uthman’s fire the traces of other readings can be sought only within the text he approved.
The retreat
Faced with the evidence, many Muslims now say: “There are differences, but the meaning was preserved.” That is what Christians have always said about the Bible: the manuscripts have small differences, but the message, who God is and what Christ has done, has been preserved. The moment a Muslim reaches this point, he also loses the right to call the Bible “corrupted”. The same standard applies to both books.
“Produce something like it”: the verses of Umar
The Qur’an counts its own uniqueness as proof of its divine origin and issues a challenge: produce a surah like it (Qur’an 2:23; 10:38), produce ten surahs (Qur’an 11:13), produce the like of this Qur’an (Qur’an 17:88), “let them produce a statement like it” (Qur’an 52:34). The bar is that low: a single statement will do.
Now let us turn to the book Islam holds most reliable after the Qur’an: Bukhari. Umar, one of Muhammad’s closest companions and the second caliph, says:
“My Lord agreed with me in three things. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I wish we took the station of Abraham as a place of prayer’, and the verse came down: ‘Take the station of Abraham as a place of prayer.’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, good and bad people come in to your wives; I wish you would order them to veil themselves’, and the verse of the veil came down. When the Prophet’s wives banded together against him out of jealousy, I said to them, ‘It may be that if he divorces you, his Lord will give him in your place wives better than you’, and this verse came down in exactly those words.”
Bukhari 402
Three verses: Qur’an 2:125; 33:53; 66:5. Umar said it first; the Qur’an repeated it afterwards. Inside the very book that says “you cannot produce the like of it”, a man’s words became verses.
The Muslim is left with two options:
- Umar was a prophet and received revelation. Yet according to the Qur’an, Muhammad is the seal of the prophets (Qur’an 33:40), and Muhammad says: “There is no prophet between me and Jesus” (Bukhari 3442).
- Umar was not a prophet. Then some verses of the Qur’an are the word of a man, and the challenge collapses.
The objection “But the Arabic is not word for word the same” does not help. The challenge was never to produce the very same words, but something like it. Umar produced something like it, in Muhammad’s lifetime, three times.
3Kur’an’ın BilmedikleriWhat the Qur’an Didn’t Know
Onayladığı kitabı tanımıyordu
İkilemin arkasında basit bir gerçek yatar: Kur’an, Tevrat’ı ve İncil’i onaylar ama içlerinde ne yazdığını bilmez.
- Muhammed’in adı. Kur’an, Yahudilerin ve Hristiyanların Muhammed’i “yanlarındaki Tevrat’ta ve İncil’de yazılı bulduklarını” söyler (Kur’an 7:157).
- Cihat vaadi. Kur’an’a göre Allah, “Allah yolunda savaşan, öldüren ve öldürülen” müminlere cennet vaat etmiştir ve bu vaat “Tevrat’ta, İncil’de ve Kur’an’da” yazılıdır (Kur’an 9:111). İncil’de böyle bir vaat yok. Tam tersine İsa, kılıcını çeken Petrus’a “Kılıcını yerine koy” der (Matta 26:52).
- Tanınma. Kur’an, Kitap ehlinin Muhammed’i “kendi oğullarını tanıdıkları gibi” tanıdığını (Kur’an 2:146) ve İsrailoğulları’nın âlimlerinin onu bildiğini söyler (Kur’an 26:197). Bu, Mekke’de yıllarca söylendi. Ama Muhammed Medine’ye gelince oradaki Yahudiler onu tanımadı. Bunun üzerine Kur’an onları gerçeği gizlemekle suçlamaya başladı.
Muhammed ve arkadaşları bu kitapları kendileri okuyamıyordu. Buhari şöyle anlatır: “Kitap ehli Tevrat’ı İbranice okur, Müslümanlara Arapça açıklardı. Resulullah şöyle dedi: ‘Kitap ehlini ne doğrulayın ne yalanlayın’” (Buhari 4485). Yani Kur’an’daki Kutsal Kitap bilgisi okuyarak değil, kulaktan duyarak edinildi.
Kur’an’a göre İsa çamurdan kuş biçimleri yapar, onlara üfler ve kuşlar canlanır (Kur’an 3:49). Bu hikâye İncil’de yok. Hikâye, 2. yüzyılda yazılmış ve Kilise’nin hiçbir zaman kabul etmediği Tomas’ın Çocukluk İncili’nden gelir: Beş yaşındaki İsa, Şabat günü çamurdan on iki serçe yapar, ellerini çırpar ve serçeler uçup gider (2. bölüm).
- Hurma ağacı. Kur’an’a göre Meryem doğum sancısı çekerken bir hurma ağacının dibine sığınır. Kur’an bu efsaneyi alıp İsa’nın doğumuna taşır.
- Bir rabbi yorumu. Kabil ile Habil’in hikâyesinden hemen sonra Kur’an şöyle der: “Bu yüzden İsrailoğulları’na şunu yazdık: Kim bir cana kıyarsa bütün insanları öldürmüş gibidir; kim birini yaşatırsa bütün insanları yaşatmış gibidir” (Kur’an 5:32).
Muhammed’in çağdaşları da bunu fark etmişti. Kur’an onların sözlerini aktarır: “Bunlar öncekilerin masallarıdır; onları yazdırmış, sabah akşam ona okunuyor” (Kur’an 25:5). Ona “O bir kulaktır”, yani her duyduğuna inanan biri, diyorlardı (Kur’an 9:61).
Mantıkları şu: Kur’an’daki bilimsel doğrular, onun Tanrı’dan geldiğini kanıtlar.
Kur’an 18:86
Kur’an tek başına yetmez
Kur’an kendini “her şeyin ayrıntılı açıklaması” olarak tanıtır (Kur’an 12:111; 6:114; 16:89). Ama günde beş vakit namaz Kur’an’da geçmez; Miraç hadisinden gelir (Buhari 349). Kur’an 17:1, “kulunu geceleyin Mescid-i Haram’dan Mescid-i Aksa’ya götüren” Allah’tan söz eder. Bu kul kim, bu mescitler nerede? Kur’an söylemez.
Sünni bir Müslüman sahih hadisi reddedemez; reddederse Muhammed’in sünnetini reddetmiş olur.
- Hadisleri reddedip yalnızca Kur’an’a dönerse, “her şeyi ayrıntılı açıklayan” kitabın namazın nasıl kılınacağını bile söylemediğini kabul etmek zorunda kalır.
It didn’t know the book it confirmed
Behind the dilemma lies a simple fact: the Qur’an confirms the Torah and the Gospel, but it does not know what is written in them.
- Muhammad’s name. The Qur’an says Jews and Christians find Muhammad “written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel” (Qur’an 7:157), and has Jesus announce “a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad” (Qur’an 61:6). No such name is in the Torah or the Gospel.
- The promise of jihad. According to the Qur’an, Allah has promised Paradise to believers who “fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed”, and this promise is written “in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur’an” (Qur’an 9:111). There is no such promise in the Gospel; to Peter, who drew his sword, Jesus says, “Put your sword back into its place” (Matthew 26:52).
- Recognition. The Qur’an says the People of the Book know Muhammad “as they know their own sons” (Qur’an 2:146), and that the scholars of the Children of Israel recognize him (Qur’an 26:197). This was said for years in Mecca. When Muhammad came to Medina, the Jews there did not recognize him, and the Qur’an began accusing them of concealing the truth.
Muhammad and his companions could not read these books themselves. Bukhari reports: “The People of the Book used to read the Torah in Hebrew and explain it in Arabic to the Muslims. The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Do not believe the People of the Book, nor disbelieve them’” (Bukhari 4485). The Qur’an’s knowledge of the Bible came from hearing, not reading. And much of what was heard is not in the Bible:
- The clay birds. According to the Qur’an, Jesus shapes birds out of clay, breathes into them and they come to life (Qur’an 3:49). This story is not in the Gospel. It comes from the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, written in the 2nd century and never accepted by the Church: the five-year-old Jesus makes twelve sparrows of clay on the Sabbath, claps his hands, and the sparrows fly away (chapter 2).
- The palm tree. According to the Qur’an, Mary in the pains of labor takes refuge at the trunk of a palm tree; when she shakes it, fresh dates fall, and a stream flows beneath her (Qur’an 19:23-26). This is not in the Gospel either. It is a legend from apocryphal texts such as the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew, set during the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt (chapter 20). The Qur’an takes the legend and moves it to the birth of Jesus.
- A rabbinic commentary. Right after the story of Cain and Abel, the Qur’an says: “Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul, it is as if he had slain mankind entirely; and whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved mankind entirely” (Qur’an 5:32). This sentence is not in the Torah. It is a rabbinic comment on the story of Cain, found in the Mishnah (Sanhedrin 4:5). The Qur’an presents a rabbinic commentary as a ruling Allah wrote for Israel.
Muhammad’s contemporaries noticed. The Qur’an quotes them: “Legends of the former peoples which he has had written down, and they are dictated to him morning and evening” (Qur’an 25:5). They called him “an ear”, someone who believes whatever he hears (Qur’an 9:61). The Qur’an rejects these charges; but the sources above are there for all to see. A prophet who had never read the book he confirmed was speaking in Allah’s name about what that book says.
Scientific miracle, or muddy spring?
Muslim preachers say they find “scientific miracles” in the Qur’an, from the Big Bang to embryology. Their logic runs like this: the scientific truths in the Qur’an prove that it came from God. Then the reverse holds too: if there is a scientific error in the Qur’an, it did not come from God. A single example is enough.
“Until, when he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of black mud, and he found near it a people.”
Qur’an 18:86
The verse does not say “it looked to him as if it were setting”; it says “he found it setting”. Dhul-Qarnayn reaches the place where the sun sets, and people live there. Muhammad himself refutes the defense “that was only his point of view”:
Abu Dharr said: I was behind the Messenger of Allah as the sun was setting. He asked: “Do you know where this sets?” I said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “It sets in a spring of hot water.”
Abu Dawud 4002
No one asked him; Muhammad asked the question and gave the answer himself: the sun sets in a spring. According to another hadith, in Bukhari, after setting the sun goes and prostrates beneath the Throne and asks permission to rise again (Bukhari 3199). That is not a point of view; it is a description of the cosmos, and it is wrong.
“You don’t know Arabic”
This is usually the answer that comes at this point. Then the hundreds of millions of Muslims who do not know Arabic cannot know their religion either, and neither can any Muslim who reads the Qur’an in translation. With this defense the Muslim shoots himself in the foot. Besides, the Arabic of these verses is clear, and Islam’s own commentators give the meaning above. When a question of translation comes up in the Bible, we go to the Hebrew and the Greek; for the Qur’an, too, we go to the Arabic and to the commentaries of Muslim scholars.
The Qur’an is not enough on its own
The Qur’an presents itself as “a detailed explanation of all things” (Qur’an 12:111; 6:114; 16:89). But the five daily prayers are not in the Qur’an; they come from the hadith of the Night Journey (Bukhari 349). Qur’an 17:1 speaks of the One “who took His servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa”. Who is this servant, and where are these mosques? The Qur’an does not say. The return of Jesus, the Antichrist (Dajjal) and the signs of the Last Hour are likewise told not in the Qur’an but in the hadith.
Here is the Muslim’s second dilemma:
- If he accepts the hadith, then Aisha’s age of nine, the lost suckling verse, adult suckling, the verses of Umar and the sun setting in a spring are his too. A Sunni Muslim cannot reject an authentic hadith; if he does, he rejects the Sunnah of Muhammad.
- If he rejects the hadith and falls back on the Qur’an alone, he must admit that the book that “explains all things in detail” does not even say how to pray. And the Sunni majority already count him an apostate.
When Qur’an-only Muslims reject the hadith, they are in fact noticing something true: the portrait of Muhammad in the hadith is appalling. But those who painted that portrait are not Islam’s enemies; they are Islam’s first and most respected scholars.
II. BölümPart II
Peygamber: “En Güzel Örnek”The Prophet: “The Finest Example”
4“En Güzel Örnek” mi?“The Finest Example”?
Ayşe ve çocuk evliliği
Kur’an, Muhammed’i inananlar için “güzel bir örnek” olarak sunar (Kur’an 33:21).
Ayşe, Muhammed’in yanında bebekleriyle oynamaya devam etti.
Kur’an, boşanan kadınların bekleme süresini anlatırken “henüz hiç hayız görmemiş olanlar”ı da sayar (Kur’an 65:4).
Müslüman gençlere, Muhammed’in köleliği kaldırdığı anlatılır. Kur’an da savaş esirlerinden Muhammed’in payına düşen cariyeleri ona helal kılar (Kur’an 33:50). Köleliği kaldıran bir peygamber köle alıp satmaz.
Eleştiriye nasıl karşılık verdiği de ortada. Ka’b bin Eşref, şiirleriyle Muhammed’i yeren bir şairdi. Muhammed “Allah’ı ve Resulü’nü inciten Ka’b bin Eşref’i kim öldürecek?” diye sordu.
Muhammed’i eleştiren Hristiyanlara ölüm tehditleri yağdıran Müslümanlara “Bu İslam’a aykırı” diyen iyi niyetli Müslümanlar yanılıyor. Bu tehditler, peygamberin kendi örneğine dayanıyor.
Savaş konusunda da durum aynı. Kur’an şöyle emreder:
Kur’an 9:29
Mekke’de, Müslümanlar azınlıktayken Kur’an “Sizin dininiz size, benim dinim bana” diyordu (Kur’an 109:6). Muhammed’in son yıllarında ise Tevbe suresi geldi. Yani Kur’an’ın Kitap ehline son sözü Kur’an 9:29’dur.
Kur’an, kendini Muhammed’e hibe eden kadınlardan dilediğini alma ya da bekletme iznini ona verir (Kur’an 33:50-51).
- Müslüman erkeklere dört eş sınırı konurken (Kur’an 4:3) Muhammed’e bu sınır konmadı. Kendini ona hibe eden kadınlar da “yalnız sana mahsus” denerek ona helal kılındı (Kur’an 33:50).
- Muhammed’in ölümünden sonra eşlerinin başka biriyle evlenmesi yasaklandı (Kur’an 33:53).
- Savaş ganimetinin beşte biri Allah’a ve Resulü’ne ayrıldı (Kur’an 8:41).
Muhammed’in evlatlığı Zeyd, Zeyneb bint Cahş ile evliydi. Zeyd karısını boşadı ve Muhammed Zeyneb’le evlendi. Araplar evlatlığın karısını öz gelin sayardı, bu yüzden tepki büyük oldu. Kur’an şu ayetle cevap verdi: “Zeyd ondan ilişiğini kesince, evlatlıkları eşlerinden ilişiklerini kestiklerinde müminlere bir güçlük olmasın diye seni onunla evlendirdik” (Kur’an 33:37).
Ardından Kur’an evlatlığı kaldırdı: Evlatlıklar artık öz oğul sayılmayacak, kendi babalarının adıyla çağrılacaktı (Kur’an 33:4-5). “Muhammed sizin adamlarınızdan hiçbirinin babası değildir” (Kur’an 33:40).
Muhammed’in Mekke’deki ilk yıllarda baskı gördüğü ve Medine’ye göç etmek zorunda kaldığı doğrudur. Onlar Mesih’in dirildiğini gördüklerine tanıklık ettiler.
Aisha and child marriage
The Qur’an presents Muhammad to believers as “an excellent example” (Qur’an 33:21). Once the hadith collections were translated and put online, young Muslims began to read in their own sources what this example actually was. Nothing shook them more than this.
“The Prophet married her (Aisha) when she was six years old, he consummated the marriage when she was nine, and she remained with him for nine years.”
Bukhari 5133; also Bukhari 3894 and Muslim 1422a
Muhammad was past fifty at the time. There is not a single authentic hadith that makes Aisha older than nine on her wedding night; the authentic reports all say the same thing. Defenses such as “girls matured early in the desert heat” or “nine back then was eighteen today” are excuses born not of the hadith, but of shame.
Before this marriage, Muhammad said he had seen Aisha in a dream: an angel brought her wrapped in silk and said, “This is your wife” (Bukhari 3895). Aisha, still a little girl, is presented in a dream as though by revelation. A report in Muslim adds one more detail: when Aisha was taken to Muhammad’s house as a bride at the age of nine, her dolls were with her (Muslim 1422c). Aisha went on playing with her dolls in Muhammad’s presence. Why was this allowed, when Islam forbids images and figures? Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani explains in his commentary on Bukhari: Aisha was a little girl who had not yet reached puberty (Bukhari 6130, with his explanation in Fath al-Bari). According to one of Islam’s greatest hadith scholars, Aisha was still a child even after the marriage was consummated.
Nor is the issue only Muhammad’s own marriage. When the Qur’an sets the waiting period of divorced women, it also includes “those who have not yet menstruated” (Qur’an 65:4). Commentators such as Ibn Kathir and al-Tabari explain this as girls who have not yet reached puberty, and Bukhari, too, cites this verse as proof in the heading of his chapter on marrying off young children. In other words, the Qur’an lays down a rule governing the marriage, consummation and divorce of a girl who has not reached puberty. Some Muslim apologists no longer hide this; they defend it openly. At least they are honest: this is not slander; it is Islam itself.
Slaves, the sword and the critics
Young Muslims are told that Muhammad abolished slavery. The sources say otherwise. According to Muslim, a slave pledged allegiance to Muhammad for the emigration; when his master came to claim him, Muhammad bought him for two black slaves (Muslim 1602). The Qur’an, too, makes lawful for Muhammad the slave women who fell to him from the captives of war (Qur’an 33:50). A prophet who abolished slavery does not buy and sell slaves.
His answer to criticism is just as plain. Ka’b ibn al-Ashraf was a poet who mocked Muhammad in his verses. Muhammad asked: “Who will kill Ka’b ibn al-Ashraf, who has hurt Allah and His Messenger?” The volunteer, Muhammad ibn Maslama, asked permission to lie in order to deceive Ka’b, and Muhammad said, “You may say it.” Ka’b was tricked and killed at night (Bukhari 4037). Elsewhere Muhammad says, “War is deceit” (Bukhari 3030). In Abu Dawud, a blind man kills his slave woman, the mother of his children, in her sleep because she kept reviling Muhammad. When Muhammad hears the story, he says: “Bear witness, her blood is forfeit”; the killer receives no punishment at all (Abu Dawud 4361).
Death for the critic, and death for the one who leaves. Muhammad says: “Whoever changes his religion, kill him” (Bukhari 6922). That is why, for a Muslim, coming to Christ often means risking not only family and community, but life itself.
So the well-meaning Muslims who tell those raining death threats on Christian critics of Muhammad that “this is against Islam” are mistaken. This is the prophet’s own example.
War is no different. The Qur’an commands:
“Fight those among the People of the Book who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day, who do not forbid what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, and who do not follow the religion of truth, until they pay the jizya with their own hands, humbled.”
Qur’an 9:29
There is no mention here of attack or defense. The reason is unbelief. Muhammad says so plainly: “I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” (Bukhari 25). We learn this not from terrorists, but from the Qur’an, from Muhammad and from Islam’s own commentators.
Nor is this command a ruling from the early years. In Mecca, while the Muslims were a minority, the Qur’an said, “For you is your religion, and for me is my religion” (Qur’an 109:6). In Muhammad’s last years came Surat al-Tawba, which according to Bukhari was the last surah revealed in full (Bukhari 4364). The Qur’an’s last word to the People of the Book is Qur’an 9:29.
“He gained nothing”?
A common defense runs: Muhammad gained nothing of this world and suffered for his message, so he must have been a true prophet. The witness closest to him, his wife Aisha, saw something else.
The Qur’an gives Muhammad permission to take, or put off, as he pleases, the women who offer themselves to him (Qur’an 33:50-51). When this verse came down, Aisha said:
“I see that your Lord hastens to fulfill your desires.”
Muslim 1464a; Bukhari 4788
These are not the words of an enemy, but of “the mother of the believers”. Whenever Muhammad wanted something, a verse making it lawful came down at once. Look at the list:
- While Muslim men were limited to four wives (Qur’an 4:3), no such limit was placed on Muhammad; and women who offered themselves to him were made lawful to him, “for you alone” (Qur’an 33:50).
- After his death, his wives were forbidden ever to marry anyone else (Qur’an 33:53).
- A fifth of the spoils of war was set aside for Allah and His Messenger (Qur’an 8:41).
- In Medina all political, military and religious authority lay in his hands, and his critics were being killed.
Women, wealth, power and immunity from criticism. The claim that “he gained nothing” is the exact opposite of what the sources say.
The adopted son’s wife
Muhammad’s adopted son Zayd was married to Zaynab bint Jahsh. Zayd divorced her, and Muhammad married Zaynab. The Arabs regarded an adopted son’s wife as a true daughter-in-law, and the outcry was great. The Qur’an answered: “So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you in order that there be no discomfort for the believers concerning the wives of their adopted sons” (Qur’an 33:37). The same verse also says that Muhammad concealed something within himself and feared the people. Then the Qur’an abolished adoption: adopted sons would not count as true sons, and would be called by their fathers’ names (Qur’an 33:4-5); “Muhammad is not the father of any of your men” (Qur’an 33:40). So Allah laid down a principle so that believers could marry the former wives of their adopted sons, and in the same surah guaranteed, by abolishing adoption, that the principle would never be of use to anyone again. Only one person was left: Muhammad.
Permission to break an oath
According to a report in Nasa’i, Muhammad had a slave woman with whom he had relations; when Aisha and Hafsa would not leave him alone about her, Muhammad declared her forbidden to himself. Then the verse came down: “O Prophet, why do you forbid yourself what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives?” and Allah made the dissolving of oaths lawful (Qur’an 66:1-2; Nasa’i 3959). Another report, in Bukhari, ties the event to an oath about honey (Bukhari 4912). Whichever is true, the result is the same: Allah let His prophet break an oath he had sworn to please his wives, and in the same surah threatened his wives with divorce and with “wives better than you” (Qur’an 66:5). We have already heard the words of that verse from Umar’s mouth.
It is true that in the early years in Mecca he faced persecution and had to flee to Medina. But sincerity is no proof of truth; a man can be both sincere and deceived. The apostles are another matter: they testified that they had seen Christ risen, and for that testimony they gained no power, no spoils and no slave women, and they died for it.
5Vahiy: Melek mi, Başka Bir Şey mi?Revelation: An Angel, or Something Else?
Muhammed’in Hira mağarasındaki ilk deneyimini Buhari, Ayşe’nin ağzından anlatır. Varlık ona “Oku!” der; Muhammed “Okuma bilmem” diye cevap verir.
Kur’an da ona defalarca “Sen deli değilsin”, “Arkadaşınız deli değildir” demek zorunda kaldı (Kur’an 68:2; 52:29; 81:22).
Kur’an da Şeytan’ın bir peygamberin okuduklarına karışabileceğini kabul eder (Kur’an 22:52; bkz. Kur’an 53:19-23).
Kur’an, Tanrı adına söz uyduran birinin başına ne geleceğini kendisi söyler:
“Eğer o bize karşı bazı sözler uydurmuş olsaydı, onu sağ elinden yakalardık, sonra onun şah damarını keserdik.”
Kur’an 69:44-46
Muhammed, Hayber’de bir Yahudi kadının zehirleyip ona ikram ettiği kuzu etinden yedi (Buhari 3169). Buhari’ye göre ölüm döşeğinde Ayşe’ye şöyle dedi:
“Ey Ayşe! Hayber’de yediğim yemeğin acısını hâlâ duyuyorum. Şu an o zehirden şah damarımın kesildiğini hissediyorum.”
Buhari 4428
Kur’an’daki “el-vetin” ile hadisteki “ebher”, Arap sözlükçülerinin kalpten çıkan ana atardamar için kullandığı iki kelimedir. Kur’an, sahte bir peygamberin nasıl öleceğini anlattı; Muhammed de kendi ölümünü aynı damarla anlattı. Bu ölçüyü biz koymadık, Kur’an koydu.
Kuzu
Bir Hristiyan bu ayrıntıyı görmezden gelemez. Vaftizci Yahya İsa’yı gösterip şöyle dedi: “İşte, dünyanın günahını ortadan kaldıran Tanrı Kuzusu!” (Yuhanna 1:29).
Bukhari tells of Muhammad’s first experience in the cave of Hira in Aisha’s words. The being says to him: “Read!” Muhammad says: “I cannot read.” The being seizes him and squeezes him until he can bear it no more, lets him go, and squeezes him again; this happens three times. Muhammad returns home trembling, says “Cover me”, and as he tells Khadija what happened, he says: “I fear that something has happened to me” (Bukhari 3).
According to Ibn Ishaq’s biography, Muhammad’s own first interpretation was this: of all Allah’s creatures, the ones he hated most were poets and the possessed, and he feared he had become one of them; he thought of climbing to the top of the mountain and throwing himself down. Bukhari, too, reports that when the revelation paused for a time, Muhammad set out again and again to throw himself from the mountaintops (Bukhari 6982).
So it was not Christians who first took this experience for a dark power; it was Muhammad himself. Those who convinced him it was an angel were his wife Khadija and her Christian cousin Waraqa.
Muslims compare this to the prophet Daniel fainting before Gabriel. Let us compare. When Gabriel came near, Daniel fell on his face; Gabriel touched him and set him on his feet (Daniel 8:17-18). In another vision, when Daniel had lost his strength, he was touched, strengthened and told: “O man greatly beloved, fear not, peace be with you; be strong” (Daniel 10:10-19). Gabriel opened with the same words to Zechariah and to Mary: “Do not be afraid” (Luke 1:13; 1:30). When the risen Jesus Himself appeared to John, John fell at His feet as though dead; Jesus laid His right hand on him and said, “Fear not, I am the first and the last” (Revelation 1:17).
The angel of the Bible lifts the overwhelmed man up, strengthens him and wishes him peace. The being at Hira squeezes a terrified man three times until he can bear no more, and leaves him on the edge of suicide. These are not the same Gabriel.
The way the revelation came did not change in later years. Muhammad said it sometimes came “like the ringing of a bell”, and that this was the hardest; Aisha tells that she saw him receive revelation on a very cold day with sweat dripping from his forehead (Bukhari 2). Those around him considered him mad, and the Qur’an had to tell him again and again, “You are not a madman”, “Your companion is not mad” (Qur’an 68:2; 52:29; 81:22).
The Satanic verses
Early Muslim historians (al-Tabari and Ibn Sa’d, drawing on Ibn Ishaq) tell how Muhammad once recited words praising the goddesses of Mecca, al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat, and then said these were words Satan had cast onto his tongue. The Qur’an, too, admits that Satan can interfere in a prophet’s recitation (Qur’an 22:52; see Qur’an 53:19-23). The early generations reported this event without embarrassment; later scholars grew uncomfortable and began to reject it. In a religion that admits Satan was able to speak through the prophet’s mouth even once, who can know how many times it happened?
The Bible is clear on this. The most famous verse Muslims read as foretelling Muhammad is Deuteronomy 18:18: “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brethren.” Two verses later it says: “But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die” (Deuteronomy 18:20). A prophet who praised al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat is, by the Torah of Moses, a false prophet.
The bewitched prophet
According to Bukhari, a man named Labid ibn al-A’sam worked magic on Muhammad, and for a time Muhammad began to imagine he had done things he had not done (Bukhari 5763). How can one trust the words that a man who could not trust his own mind said he received from Allah?
The aorta
The Qur’an itself says what will happen to one who invents words in God’s name:
“And if he had invented against Us some sayings, We would have seized him by the right hand, then We would have cut his aorta.”
Qur’an 69:44-46
At Khaybar, Muhammad ate of the mutton, a lamb, that a Jewish woman had poisoned and served to him (Bukhari 3169). According to Bukhari, in his final illness he said to Aisha:
“O Aisha! I still feel the pain of the food I ate at Khaybar. At this moment I feel as if my aorta is being cut by that poison.”
Bukhari 4428
The Qur’an’s “al-watin” and the hadith’s “al-abhar” are two words Arab lexicographers use for the great artery that leaves the heart. The Qur’an described the end of a false prophet; Muhammad described his own end with the same artery. We did not set this standard; the Qur’an did.
The Lamb
No Christian can walk past this detail. John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and said: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). The father of sin and of lies is Satan (John 8:44), and false prophecy is his work too. The Son of God appeared to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8), and in the Book of Revelation the Lamb conquers those who make war on Him together with the false prophet (Revelation 17:14; 19:20). The prophet of a book that says whoever invents words in God’s name will have his aorta cut died by the meat of a lamb. The Lamb takes away the sin of the world: false prophecy too, and the Satan behind it.

Tanrı: Kâbe’nin Rabbi Kim?God: Who Is the Lord of the Kaaba?
6Kâbe’nin Rabbi Kim?Who Is the Lord of the Kaaba?
Baba mı, efendi mi?
İslam, İbrahim’in saf tektanrıcılığını geri getirdiğini söyler. Ama Hristiyanlık da tektanrıcıdır: Tek bir Tanrı vardır, Baba, Oğul ve Kutsal Ruh olarak. Asıl fark başka yerde. İbrahim’in Tanrısı bir Baba’dır; Kur’an’ın ilahı ise kimsenin babası değildir.
Kur’an 19:93
Kur’an, Yahudilerin ve Hristiyanların “Biz Allah’ın oğullarıyız” sözünü reddeder ve “Öyleyse sizi günahlarınız yüzünden niçin cezalandırıyor?” diye sorar (Kur’an 5:18).
Kur’an bu teslimiyetin Muhammed’e olacağını söyler: “Resule itaat eden Allah’a itaat etmiş olur” (Kur’an 4:80).
Amr bir put istedi, ona Hübel’i verdiler. Amr Hübel’i getirip Kâbe’ye dikti. Müslüman âlim Martin Lings de Hübel’in Mekke’nin baş putu olduğunu yazar. İslam’a sempatisiyle bilinen Karen Armstrong bile Muhammed’in zamanında Kâbe’nin resmen Hübel’e adandığını kabul eder.
Kur’an’a göre Muhammed’den önceki Mekkeliler de Allah’ı yaratıcı olarak tanıyordu (Kur’an 29:61). Oysa İbrahim’in ya da İsmail’in Mekke’ye gittiğini gösteren, İslam öncesine ait tek bir kayıt yoktur. Kutsal Kitap, İsmail’in Mekke’den yüzlerce kilometre uzaktaki Paran Çölü’nde yaşadığını söyler (Yaratılış 21:21).
- İhlas suresinde Allah “es-Samed” diye anılır (Kur’an 112:2). Müfessirler bu kelimenin anlamında anlaşamadı. İslam âlimi Franz Rosenthal’a göre kelime, Kenan’da Baal’in savaş topuzunun adıdır; Gaziantep yakınlarında bulunan bir yazıtta bir tanrı “Baal-Samed” diye anılır.
- Muhammed’in dedesi Abdülmuttalip, oğullarından birini Kâbe’de kurban etmeyi adamıştı. Fal oku, Hübel’in önünde Muhammed’in babası Abdullah’a çıktı. Onu kurtaran, bir kâhin kadının cininden gelen tavsiye oldu. İbrahim’in Tanrısı ise insan kurbanını durdurdu (Yaratılış 22:12).
“Ama Kur’an Baal’i kınıyor”
Kur’an’da İlyas kavmine “Baal’e mi yalvarıyorsunuz?” der (Kur’an 37:125).
Father or master?
Islam claims to bring back the pure monotheism of Abraham. But Christianity is monotheistic too: there is one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The real difference lies elsewhere. The God of Abraham is a Father; the god of the Qur’an is no one’s father.
“There is no one in the heavens and the earth but that he comes to the Most Merciful as a slave.”
Qur’an 19:93
The Qur’an rejects the claim of Jews and Christians, “We are the children of Allah,” and asks, “Then why does He punish you for your sins?” (Qur’an 5:18). The Bible says the opposite: “The Lord disciplines him whom he loves”; discipline is the proof that you are a son (Hebrews 12:6-8). God tells Moses, “Israel is my first-born son” (Exodus 4:22). Jesus teaches us to pray “Our Father who art in heaven” (Matthew 6:9). And Paul says, “You are no longer a slave but a son” (Galatians 4:7). This isn’t a different emphasis about the same God; it is a different god altogether.
The word “Islam” means “submission.” The Qur’an says that submission is owed to Muhammad: “He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah” (Qur’an 4:80). In the Gospel there is someone else who wants people to bow to him: Satan (Matthew 4:8-9). Christ, by contrast, says, “If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).
Hubal, the idol of the Kaaba
The Christian apologist Sam Shamoun builds his case on Islam’s own sources. According to Ibn Hisham and Ibn Kathir, Amr ibn Luhayy of Mecca travelled to the old land of Moab. There he saw people worshipping idols, who told him, “We ask them for rain and they send rain.” Amr asked for an idol and was given Hubal. He brought it back and set it up at the Kaaba. The Muslim scholar Martin Lings also writes that Hubal was the chief idol of Mecca. Even Karen Armstrong, known for her sympathy toward Islam, grants that in Muhammad’s time the Kaaba was officially dedicated to Hubal.
Hubal is Baal
Baal is the Canaanite god of rain and storm. All through the Bible he is the great rival who pulls Israel away from God, and Moab was one of the places he was worshipped (Numbers 25:1-3). Hubal came from Moab, and people asked him for rain. Some researchers think the name Hubal comes from the Aramaic “hu-Bel,” meaning “he is Baal.” And Jesus says that Be-elzebul, that is Baal, is Satan (Mark 3:22-26).
The Qur’an says the Meccans before Muhammad already knew Allah as the creator (Qur’an 29:61). For Shamoun, if Mecca’s greatest god was Hubal, then “Allah” was his title. Yet there is not a single pre-Islamic record showing that Abraham or Ishmael ever went to Mecca. The Bible says Ishmael lived in the wilderness of Paran, hundreds of kilometers from Mecca (Genesis 21:21).
Traces that remain today
- Kissing the Black Stone, Umar said: “I know that you are a stone that can neither harm nor benefit anyone. Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah kissing you, I would not have kissed you” (Bukhari 1597).
- In the surah al-Ikhlas, Allah is called “al-Samad” (Qur’an 112:2). Muslim commentators never agreed on what the word means. According to the scholar of Islam Franz Rosenthal, in Canaan it was the name of Baal’s war mace; an inscription found near Gaziantep calls a god “Baal-Samad.”
- Muhammad’s grandfather, Abd al-Muttalib, vowed to sacrifice one of his sons at the Kaaba. The divining arrow, cast before Hubal, fell on Abdullah, Muhammad’s father. What saved him was advice from a sorceress’s jinn. The God of Abraham, by contrast, stopped the sacrifice of a son (Genesis 22:12).
“But the Qur’an condemns Baal”
In the Qur’an, Elijah asks his people, “Do you call upon Baal?” (Qur’an 37:125). But this retells the Bible’s story of Elijah (1 Kings 18). The Meccans knew their idol by the name Hubal, not Baal. Condemning an old, forgotten name doesn’t mean recognizing the god behind it.
Shamoun’s conclusion: the god of the Kaaba was Hubal, Hubal was Baal, and Baal, in Jesus’ words, is Satan. And we add, as he does: Muslims are not our enemies, but people whose salvation we long for. The real enemy is the lie that deceives them.

İtirazlarObjections
7Hristiyanlığa Yöneltilen İtirazlarObjections Against Christianity
“Ama Eski Ahit de şiddet dolu”
Bu itiraz her tartışmada karşımıza çıkar. Aradaki farkı görmek için metinleri okumak yeter.
- Belirli bir toprak. Tanrı İsrail’i dünyanın bütün uluslarına karşı savaşa göndermedi; ona sınırları belli bir toprak verdi (Çölde Sayım 34:1-12). Hatta komşu Edom, Moab ve Ammon topraklarına dokunmayı açıkça yasakladı: “Onlarla savaşa girmeyin, çünkü topraklarından size bir karış bile vermeyeceğim” (Yasa’nın Tekrarı 2:4-5, 9, 19).
- Belirli bir yargı. Tanrı o toprağı İbrahim’e hemen vermedi, çünkü “Amorluların suçu henüz doruğa ulaşmadı” (Yaratılış 15:16). Dört yüz yıl bekledi. Kenan’daki savaşlar, yüzyıllarca sabırla ertelenmiş bir yargıdır. Bunun sebebi İsrail’in doğruluğu değil, o ulusların kötülüğüdür (Yasa’nın Tekrarı 9:4-5).
Bugün hiçbir Hristiyan’a bu ayetlerle savaşmak emredilmez. Mesih’in Kilisesi’ne verilen emir, uluslara gidip onları öğrenci yapmaktır (Matta 28:19).
Kur’an ise Yahudilerle ve Hristiyanlarla, saldırdıkları için değil, inanmadıkları için, boyun eğip cizye verene dek savaşmayı emreder (Kur’an 9:29). “Fitne kalmayıp din tamamen Allah’ın oluncaya kadar” savaşmayı emreder (Kur’an 8:39).
Elle kopyalanan her eski kitapta böyle farklar vardır; Kur’an nüshalarında da.
Yeni Ahit’in neredeyse yarısını oluşturan mektupların yazarı Pavlus, davetçilerin en sevdiği günah keçisidir.
Kur’an’a göre İsa’nın havarileri şöyle dedi: “Allah’ın yardımcıları biziz; Allah’a iman ettik, Müslüman olduğumuza şahit ol” (Kur’an 3:52).
“But the Old Testament is violent too”
This objection comes up in every debate. To see the difference, it is enough to read the texts.
- A particular land. God did not send Israel against all the nations of the world; He gave it a land with fixed borders (Numbers 34:1-12). He even forbade them outright to touch the neighboring lands of Edom, Moab and Ammon: “do not contend with them; for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on” (Deuteronomy 2:4-5, 9, 19).
- A particular judgment. God did not give Abraham that land at once, because “the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete” (Genesis 15:16). He waited four hundred years. The wars in Canaan are a judgment patiently held back for centuries: not because of Israel’s righteousness, but because of the wickedness of those nations (Deuteronomy 9:4-5).
- A finished event. These wars happened once, in one place, and they ended. No Christian is commanded today to fight by these verses; the command given to Christ’s Church is to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19).
The Qur’an, however, commands fighting Jews and Christians, not because they attacked but because they do not believe, until they submit and pay the jizya (Qur’an 9:29). It commands fighting “until there is no more fitna and religion is wholly for Allah” (Qur’an 8:39). And Muhammad says he was commanded to fight people until they bear witness to the creed of Islam (Bukhari 25). These commands have no limit and no end. The Old Testament records a judgment; the Qur’an lays down a program.
Let us turn the comparison around. The Torah forbids a first husband to take back the wife he divorced once she has married another man, and calls it “an abomination before the LORD” (Deuteronomy 24:4). The Qur’an, however, requires a woman divorced three times to marry another man first before she may return to her first husband (Qur’an 2:230), and Muhammad requires that the second marriage be consummated (Bukhari 5260). What the Torah calls an abomination, the Qur’an makes a condition. One more example of a book contradicting the book it confirms.
“The Bible is full of contradictions”
The Muslim preachers’ favorite method is to read out lists of “contradictions” in the Bible. Sam Shamoun’s answer does not wrestle with the items one by one; it cuts the root: Muhammad confirmed these books as the word of Allah in his own day, together with every difference in them. Every “contradiction” the preacher points to was in the seventh-century copies too. So either Muhammad did not know about these contradictions and confirmed books he did not know, or he knew and confirmed them anyway. Either way, the Muslim who thinks he has refuted the Bible has refuted Muhammad. Such a Muslim may pull us away from Christianity, but he can never bring us closer to Islam, because his prophet stands behind this book.
Besides, most items on these lists are either verses torn from their context or copying slips. One example: in the Hebrew text, Ahaziah’s age when he began to reign is twenty-two in 2 Kings 8:26 and forty-two in 2 Chronicles 22:2. In Hebrew, numbers are written with letters, and mixing up two similar letters produces exactly such a difference; some ancient translations, such as the Syriac, read twenty-two in the second place as well. Every ancient book copied by hand has differences like this, the copies of the Qur’an included. What matters is that, thanks to the wealth of copies, such slips can be seen and corrected. None of them changes who Jesus is, what He taught, or that He died on the cross and rose again.
“Paul corrupted Christianity”
Paul, the author of the letters that make up nearly half of the New Testament, is the preachers’ favorite scapegoat: Jesus’s disciples were Muslims, and Paul came along and corrupted the religion. The Qur’an does not allow this escape either.
According to the Qur’an, Jesus’s disciples said, “We are the supporters of Allah; we have believed in Allah, and bear witness that we are Muslims” (Qur’an 3:52). And Allah gave Jesus this promise: “I will make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection” (Qur’an 3:55). He says He kept it: “A faction of the Children of Israel believed and a faction disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant” (Qur’an 61:14).
Who are the followers of Jesus who prevailed in history? The Church that read Paul’s letters, proclaimed Jesus as the Son of God, and preached the cross and the resurrection. A monotheist, “Muslim” community of Jesus waiting for Muhammad never prevailed in history; not even a trace of it is found. If Paul really defeated Jesus’s disciples and corrupted their religion, there are two conclusions: either Allah failed to keep His promise, or Paul was stronger than Allah. Which will the Muslim choose?
The only consistent conclusion is that Paul belonged to the group that was made to prevail. In his own letter, Paul writes that James, the brother of Jesus, Peter and John gave him “the right hand of fellowship” (Galatians 2:9). Tradition tells that he was martyred for Christ in Rome, together with Peter.
Önce Duvarlar, Sonra MüjdeFirst the Walls, Then the Gospel
Bunlardan biri Nabil Kureyşi’ydi (Nabeel Qureshi).
Buhari’yi, Müslim’i ve Kur’an’ı okuyun; sonra İncil’i okuyun.
This page is not against Muslims; it is for Muslims. We speak this plainly not because we despise them, but because Christ loves them too. Soft, evasive words say nothing to a Muslim; he takes them as proof that his faith stands. The greatest respect you can show him is to take his own sources seriously and tell him the truth without evasion.
The Bible teaches us both to be “wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16) and to destroy every proud obstacle raised up against the knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 10:5). Experience shows the same: until the walls of Islam come down, the Holy Trinity, the Son of God and the cross make no sense to a Muslim; once the walls come down, the same Gospel suddenly makes sense.
And today these walls are coming down. The hadith and the commentaries are now in everyone’s pocket. Muslim clerics discuss the young people leaving the faith at their own gatherings. From every corner of the Islamic world, former Muslims tell how they saw Jesus Christ in their dreams, how He called them and brought them out of darkness. One of them was Nabeel Qureshi. He grew up a devout Muslim, argued for years with his friend David Wood, and did not find in his own sources what he had been taught. When he could not decide, he asked God for a dream; in it he found himself before a narrow door, outside a feast prepared within. Later he read the same scene in the Gospel: “Strive to enter by the narrow door” (Luke 13:24). He came to Christ and told his story in his book Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus.
If you are a Muslim and have read this far: open the sources yourself. Read Bukhari, Muslim and the Qur’an; then read the Gospel. Jesus says: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). If you have questions, write to us or go to the church nearest you.
We are praying for all of you. We are praying for the salvation of every one of you. God bless you.
