Antakya, Hristiyan tarihinin en önemli şehirlerinden biridir: Elçilerin İşleri’ne göre İsa’nın izleyicilerine ilk kez burada “Hristiyan” denildi (Elçilerin İşleri 11,26). Gelenek, Aziz Petrus’u Antakya Kilisesi’nin ilk önderi olarak kabul eder; şehrin dışındaki Aziz Petrus Mağara Kilisesi, ilk Hristiyanların toplandığı yer olarak saygı görür.
Yaklaşık 600 yıllık bir aradan sonra, Papa IX. Pius’un isteğiyle Kapuçin rahipleri 1846’da Antakya’ya yerleşti; ilk gelen rahip Parma bölgesinden Peder Basilio Galli oldu. 1852’de Sultan Abdülmecid’den alınan izinle bir manastır yapıldı. 1939’da cemaat şehrin yeni bir mahallesine taşınmak zorunda kaldı ve bir süre eski bir şeker fabrikasında toplandı.
Bugünkü kilise ve manastır, eski Antakya’nın tarihî Yahudi mahallesinde bulunan ve mimar Vilyam Azaroğlu’nun doğduğu yaklaşık 150 yıllık bir ev ile bitişiğindeki evin satın alınıp 1989–1991’de restore edilmesiyle oluştu; 1995’te bir misafirhane eklendi. Havuzlu bir avlunun çevresinde şekillenen yapı, geleneksel Antakya evlerinin özelliklerini taşır. Sarımiye Camii ve Antakya Sinagogu ile birlikte oluşturduğu “ekümenik üçgen”, ezan, çan ve hazan seslerinin bir arada duyulduğu bir hoşgörü simgesi olarak anılır.
Antioch (Antakya) is one of the most important cities in Christian history: according to the Acts of the Apostles, it was here that the followers of Jesus were first called “Christians” (Acts 11:26). Tradition holds St. Peter to be the first leader of the Church of Antioch; the Cave Church of St. Peter outside the city is venerated as the place where the first Christians gathered.
After a gap of about 600 years, at the wish of Pope Pius IX, Capuchin friars settled in Antakya in 1846; the first to come was Father Basilio Galli of the Parma region. In 1852 a friary was built with permission obtained from Sultan Abdülmecid. In 1939 the community had to move to a new part of the city and for a time met in an old sugar factory.
The present church and friary were formed when a house about 150 years old, where the architect Vilyam Azaroğlu was born, and the house next to it, in the historic Jewish quarter of old Antakya, were bought and restored in 1989–1991; a guesthouse was added in 1995. Built around a courtyard with a pool, the building has the features of traditional Antakya houses. Together with the Sarımiye Mosque and the Antakya Synagogue it forms the “ecumenical triangle”, remembered as a symbol of tolerance where the call to prayer, church bells and the voice of the cantor could be heard together.
