TarihçeHistory
Hocaalizade semtindeki Aziz Meryem Kilisesi, 19. yüzyılın sonunda Bursa’da yaşayan Fransız kökenli tüccarlar ve Hayırsever Rahibeler (Filles de la Charité) için yapıldı; kaynaklar 1881’de gayrimüslimlerin ibadetine açıldığını belirtir. Yapının içinde bir dispanser, yetimhane ve hasta bakım yeri de bulunuyordu. Kilisenin iç süslemesi 1927’de Asumsiyonist rahip Prosper Lamerand ile bir Rus ressam tarafından yapıldı.
Dikdörtgen planlı, tek nefli kilisenin cephesi sade bir gövdeye sahiptir; ana duvarların üzerinde yükselen kademeli kuleler, sivri kemerli pencereler ve gotik üslup yapıya hareket katar. Kilise 1960’tan sonra kullanılmadı; 1971’de kısa bir süre asıl işlevine döndü ve 1970’lerde İtalya’dan gelen ailelerin ibadetine açıldı.
Farklı dinlerin, dillerin ve kültürlerin bir arada yaşadığı Bursa’nın bu yüzünü de yansıtmak amacıyla, kilise 2004’te Bursa Büyükşehir Belediyesi tarafından sosyal, kültürel ve dinî işlevli bir yapı olarak restore edildi. Yaklaşık yirmi yıl boyunca Katolik, Ortodoks ve Protestan cemaatlerin birlikte ibadet ettiği, dünyada eşine az rastlanır bir kilise oldu.
Temmuz 2024’te Vakıflar Bölge Müdürlüğü, kilisenin hamamlar bölgesinde bulunduğunu, yeraltı su seviyesinin yüksek olduğunu, zeminde sıvılaşma riski ve fay hattı nedeniyle gerilim biriktiğini belirterek tahliye istedi. Cemaatin Jeoloji Mühendisleri Odası’na bağlı bir ofise hazırlattığı rapor ise riskin iddia edilenden çok daha düşük olduğunu söylüyordu. Mahkeme süreci tahliyeyle sonuçlandı ve son ayin 16 Şubat 2025’te yapıldı. Kilisenin kapanması, İznik Konsili’nin 1700. yıl dönümü için 2025’te bölgeye gelen Hristiyan hacılar için de önemli bir eksiklik oldu.
The Church of St. Mary in the Hocaalizade neighborhood was built at the end of the 19th century for French merchants living in Bursa and for the Daughters of Charity (Filles de la Charité); sources say it opened for non-Muslim worship in 1881. The building also housed a dispensary, an orphanage and a place for nursing the sick. The church’s interior was decorated in 1927 by the Assumptionist priest Prosper Lamerand and a Russian painter.
The rectangular, single-nave church has a plain body; the stepped towers rising above the main walls, the pointed-arch windows and the Gothic style give the building movement. The church fell out of use after 1960; in 1971 it briefly returned to its original purpose, and in the 1970s it was opened to families arriving from Italy for worship.
To reflect this side of Bursa, where different religions, languages and cultures lived side by side, the church was restored in 2004 by the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality as a building with social, cultural and religious uses. For about twenty years it was a church, rare anywhere in the world, where Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant congregations worshipped together.
In July 2024 the Regional Directorate of Foundations requested its evacuation, stating that the church stands in the area of the thermal baths, that the groundwater level is high, and that there is a risk of soil liquefaction and stress building up along a fault line. A report the congregation commissioned from an office attached to the Chamber of Geological Engineers, however, found the risk to be much lower than claimed. The court case ended in evacuation, and the last Mass was held on 16 February 2025. The church’s closure was also a real loss for the Christian pilgrims who came to the region in 2025 for the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea.
