TarihçeHistory

Yeşilköy’ün 1926’ya kadarki adı San Stefano (Ayastefanos), Hristiyanlığın ilk şehidi Aziz Stefanos’a adanmış eski bir kiliseden gelir. Geleneğe göre azizin kemikleri 4. yüzyılda Filistin’den İstanbul’a getirilmiş, İtalya’ya gönderilirken gemi fırtınaya yakalanıp bugünkü Yeşilköy açıklarında karaya çıkmak zorunda kalmıştır; çadırın kurulduğu yere de Aziz Stefanos’a adanmış bir kilise yapılmıştır.

Bugünkü Latin Katolik kilisesi 1865’te inşa edildi ve 1886’da resmen açıldı. 1894 depreminde taş kubbesi çöktü; yerine Avusturya’dan getirilen malzemeyle ahşap bir tavan yapıldı. Kilisenin önündeki üç heykel Fransa’dan getirilmiştir. Son tadilat ve boya çalışması 2024’te tamamlandı.

Kilise Fransisken Kapuçin rahipleri tarafından yönetilir ve ayinler Türkçe ile İtalyanca yapılır. Semtte aynı azize adanmış bir Rum Ortodoks ve bir Ermeni kilisesi de bulunur.

Until 1926 Yeşilköy was called San Stefano (Ayastefanos), after an old church dedicated to St. Stephen, the first martyr of Christianity. According to tradition, the saint’s bones were brought from Palestine to Constantinople in the 4th century; as they were being sent on to Italy, the ship was caught in a storm and had to put ashore off present-day Yeşilköy, and a church dedicated to St. Stephen was built where the tent had been pitched.

The present Latin Catholic church was built in 1865 and officially opened in 1886. Its stone dome collapsed in the earthquake of 1894 and was replaced by a wooden ceiling made with materials brought from Austria. The three statues in front of the church were brought from France. The latest renovation and repainting was completed in 2024.

The church is run by the Capuchin Franciscan friars, and Mass is said in Turkish and Italian. The neighborhood also has a Greek Orthodox and an Armenian church dedicated to the same saint.
