TarihçeHistory

Adana’nın eski Tepebağ mahallesindeki bu kilise, halk arasında “Bebekli Kilise” olarak bilinir. Adı, kulenin tepesindeki yaklaşık 2,5 metre yüksekliğindeki bronz Meryem Ana heykelinden gelir; heykel uzaktan bir bebeği andırdığı için kiliseye bu ad verilmiştir.

1880’lerde İtalyan Katolikler tarafından Aziz Pavlus adına yaptırılan kilise, Tarsuslu Aziz Pavlus’un doğduğu topraklara yakınlığıyla da anlamlıdır. Kilise bugün Anadolu Havarisel Vekilliği’ne bağlıdır ve pazar günleri Türkçe ayinle cemaate hizmet verir.

This church in Adana’s old Tepebağ neighborhood is popularly known as the “Bebekli Kilise” (the Church with the Baby). The name comes from the bronze statue of the Virgin Mary, about 2.5 meters high, on top of the tower; because from a distance the statue looks like a baby, the church was given this name.

Built in the 1880s by Italian Catholics and dedicated to St. Paul, the church is all the more meaningful for being close to the land where St. Paul of Tarsus was born. Today it belongs to the Apostolic Vicariate of Anatolia and serves its community with a Sunday Mass in Turkish.
