Bomonti’deki Notre-Dame de Lourdes, dünyada sayısı çok az olan Gürcü Katolik kiliselerinden biridir; eski kaynaklarda “Feriköy Gürcü Katolik Kilisesi” olarak geçer. 1828–1829 Osmanlı-Rus Savaşı’ndan sonra Rusların Meshet-Cavaheti bölgesinden göçe zorladığı binlerce Katolik Gürcü İstanbul’a geldi. Göç edenlerden rahip Petre Harisçiraşvili, 1861’de bu kiliseyi ve manastırı kurdu.

Manastır kısa sürede Gürcülerin kültür merkezi oldu. 1870’te kurulan matbaasında Gürcüce ve Fransızca yaklaşık 200 kitap basıldı; kız ve erkek çocuklar için okullar açıldı, 1908’de şair Akaki Tsereteli adına bir kütüphane kuruldu. Osmanlı ülkesindeki Müslüman Gürcüler için ilk okuma kitapları da burada basıldı. 1921’de Kızıl Ordu Gürcistan’ı işgal edince Noe Jordania başkanlığındaki Gürcü hükümeti ve pek çok mülteci önce buraya sığındı.

Kilise 1901’de onarıldı. İçinde kurucunun Latince-Gürcüce mezar taşı, Aziz Nino tasviri ve ana sunakta Lehçe yazılı bir Meryem ikonası bulunur; bahçede Casciali Azize Rita’ya adanmış küçük bir mabet vardır. 1955’ten sonra Gürcü Katoliklerin sayısı çok azaldığından, cemaatin büyük kısmını bugün Türk ve Ermeni Katolikler oluşturur.

Notre-Dame de Lourdes in Bomonti is one of the very few Georgian Catholic churches in the world; older sources call it the “Feriköy Georgian Catholic Church”. After the Russo-Ottoman War of 1828–1829, thousands of Catholic Georgians forced by the Russians to leave the Meskheti-Javakheti region came to Istanbul. One of the emigrants, the priest Petre Kharischirashvili, founded this church and monastery in 1861.

The monastery soon became a cultural center for the Georgians. Some 200 books in Georgian and French were printed at its press, founded in 1870; schools were opened for girls and boys, and in 1908 a library named after the poet Akaki Tsereteli was founded. The first readers for Muslim Georgians in the Ottoman lands were also printed here. When the Red Army invaded Georgia in 1921, the Georgian government under Noe Jordania and many refugees first took shelter here.

The church was repaired in 1901. Inside are the founder’s Latin-Georgian gravestone, an image of St. Nino and, on the high altar, an icon of Mary with a Polish inscription; in the garden is a small shrine dedicated to St. Rita of Cascia. Since the number of Georgian Catholics fell sharply after 1955, most of the congregation today are Turkish and Armenian Catholics.
