TarihçeHistory
Bornova’daki Meryem’in Kutsal Adı Kilisesi, bu semtte yaşayan Levanten ve Katolik aileler için kurulmuştur. Burada yaklaşık yarım yüzyıldır ahşap bir ev ve şapel bulunuyordu; kilise kanonik olarak 1797’de kuruldu. O tarihten önce ayinleri yapmak için İzmir’deki Santa Maria Kilisesi’nin rahipleri gelirdi.
Bugünkü kilise 1831’den beri ayaktadır ve Meryem’in Kutsal Adı’nı taşır. 1925’e kadar cemaatte 500’den fazla Katolik, üç rahip ve rahibeler vardı; cemaatin bir yetimhanesi ve Hayırsever Rahibeler’in yönettiği, 1935’te kapanan bir okulu bulunuyordu.
Kilise 1918’e kadar Avusturya’nın himayesindeydi; 1960’larda yedi farklı milletten 82 Hristiyanın bulunduğu cemaatin resmî dili Fransızca oldu. Kilise kuruluşundan beri Küçük Kardeşler Fransiskenleri’ne (OFM) aittir; bugün cemaatin başında Arjantinli ve Pakistanlı iki rahip bulunur ve ayinler Türkçe yapılır.
The Church of the Holy Name of Mary in Bornova was founded for the Levantine and Catholic families living in this neighborhood. For about half a century there had been a wooden house and chapel here; the church was canonically established in 1797. Before that, priests from the Santa Maria Church in Izmir came to celebrate Mass.
The present church has stood since 1831 and bears the Holy Name of Mary. Until 1925 the community had more than 500 Catholics, three priests and sisters; it had an orphanage and a school run by the Sisters of Charity, which closed in 1935.
The church was under Austrian protection until 1918; in the 1960s, when the community numbered 82 Christians of seven nationalities, its official language became French. Since its foundation the church has belonged to the Friars Minor (OFM); today two priests, from Argentina and Pakistan, lead the community, and Mass is said in Turkish.
