Buca Kilisesi’nin kökeni, 1805’te buradaki yabancı işçiler ve yazlıkçılar için yapılan, boyutları bilinmeyen bir şapele dayanır; şapelde önce bir Fransisken, sonra bir bölge rahibi ayin yapıyordu. Buca 1828’de kanonik bir cemaat oldu.
Vaftizci Yahya’ya adanan bugünkü kilise 1840’a tarihlenir ve 1866’da 64 yaşında ölen ilk bölge rahibi Don Giacomo Vitalis’in on yıllık emeğinin eseridir. Paris’teki Dışişleri arşivlerinde bulunan 1841 tarihli bir fermanın Fransızca çevirisi, kilisenin Fransız himayesindeki bir kurum olarak tanındığını gösterir. 1937–1938’de, Bornova, Samsun ve Yeşilköy kiliselerini de süsleyen Kapuçin dekoratör Peder Agostino da Modica kiliseyi süsledi.
Ekim 1932’den itibaren, bölge rahibi eksikliği nedeniyle kilise İtalya’nın Parma bölgesindeki Kapuçin rahiplerine emanet edildi. 1954 ve 1976’da restorasyonlar yapıldı; org, sunaklar ve yeni papaz evi (1970) eklendi. 2022 yazının sonundan beri Enkarne Söz Rahibeleri (Verbo Incarnato) topluluğu ve bir başepiskoposluk rahibi kilisenin yanındaki binalarda yaşamaktadır.
The Buca church has its origins in a chapel of unknown size built in 1805 for the foreign workers and summer residents here; Mass was said in it first by a Franciscan and then by a parish priest. Buca became a canonical parish in 1828.
The present church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, dates from 1840 and is the fruit of ten years’ work by the first parish priest, Don Giacomo Vitalis, who died in 1866 at the age of 64. A French translation of an 1841 firman in the Foreign Ministry archives in Paris shows that the church was recognized as an institution under French protection. In 1937–1938 the church was decorated by the Capuchin decorator Father Agostino da Modica, who also decorated the churches of Bornova, Samsun and Yeşilköy.
From October 1932, for lack of a parish priest, the church was entrusted to the Capuchin friars of the Parma region of Italy. Restorations were carried out in 1954 and 1976, and an organ, altars and a new presbytery (1970) were added. Since the end of summer 2022 a community of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word (Verbo Incarnato) and a priest of the archdiocese have lived in the buildings beside the church.
