Göztepe’deki Notre-Dame de Lourdes cemaati 1900’de Hollandalı rahip Peder Fercken tarafından kuruldu. O yıllarda Göztepe, ağırlıklı olarak Latin Hristiyanların yaşadığı küçük bir köydü. 27 Mayıs 1900’de İzmir Başepiskoposu André Timoni kilisenin açılışını yaptı ve henüz bitmemiş kilisede Lourdes Meryem Ana kardeşliğini kurdu; cemaat üyeleri inşaatın tamamlanmasına küçük katkılarıyla destek oldu.
17 Ekim 1902’de, 400’den fazla üyesi olan kardeşliğin Fransa’daki Lourdes Bazilikası’nın büyük kardeşliğine bağlanması istendi. Raymond Péré’nin tasarladığı Carrara mermerinden yüksek sunak 9 Ekim 1904’te kutsandı; sunağın altında Büyük Aziz Yakup ile Azize Perpetua ve Felicitas’ın rölikleri vardır. Heykellerin ve iki çandan birinin çoğu 1904–1906 arasında bağışçılar tarafından hediye edildi.
Kuruluşundan beri Fransızca konuşan cemaat, 1960’lara kadar canlılığını korudu; Hristiyan nüfusu azaldıkça küçüldü ve yıllarca Alsancak’taki Dominikenler tarafından ayakta tutuldu. 2006’dan itibaren manastır ve kilisede yapılan büyük yenileme, Afrikalı öğrencilerin gelişi ve kilisede kalan bir rahiple cemaat yeniden canlandı. Ayinler bugün Türkçe yapılır.
The parish of Notre-Dame de Lourdes in Göztepe was founded in 1900 by the Dutch priest Father Fercken. In those years Göztepe was a small village inhabited mostly by Latin Christians. On 27 May 1900 the Archbishop of Izmir, André Timoni, opened the church and founded the confraternity of Our Lady of Lourdes in the still unfinished church; members of the community supported the completion of the building with their small contributions.
On 17 October 1902 it was requested that the confraternity, which had more than 400 members, be affiliated with the great confraternity of the Basilica of Lourdes in France. The high altar of Carrara marble designed by Raymond Péré was consecrated on 9 October 1904; beneath it are relics of St. James the Great and of Saints Perpetua and Felicity. Most of the statues and one of the two bells were given by benefactors between 1904 and 1906.
French-speaking since its foundation, the community kept its vitality until the 1960s; as the Christian population declined it shrank, and for years it was kept alive by the Dominicans of Alsancak. From 2006, with a major renovation of the friary and church, the arrival of African students and a priest living at the church, the community came back to life. Mass is said in Turkish today.
