TarihçeHistory

Meryem Ana’nın Müjdesi’ne adanan İskenderun Katedrali, Anadolu Havarisel Vekilliği’nin katedralidir. 16. yüzyılda İspanya’da kurulan Yalınayak Karmelit tarikatının rahipleri 1858’de İskenderun’a geldi ve yeni bir kilisenin inşasına başladı.

Kilise bir yangından sonra 1888–1901 yıllarında yenilenerek yeniden hizmete girdi. Toskanalı Peder Paolo Pergantino 1871’den itibaren kırk yıl boyunca burada görev yaptı; zamanla rahiplerin kalması için kiliseye bir manastır eklendi.

6 Şubat 2023 depremlerinde katedralin büyük kısmı çöktü. Vekilliğin episkoposu Luigi Padovese 2010’da İskenderun’da öldürülmüştü; bugün vekilliği Cizvit piskopos Antuan İlgit yönetmektedir.

Dedicated to the Annunciation, the Iskenderun Cathedral is the cathedral of the Apostolic Vicariate of Anatolia. Priests of the Discalced Carmelite order, founded in Spain in the 16th century, came to Iskenderun in 1858 and began building a new church.

After a fire, the church was renewed in 1888–1901 and returned to service. Father Paolo Pergantino of Tuscany served here for forty years from 1871; over time a friary was added to the church for the priests to live in.

Most of the cathedral collapsed in the earthquakes of 6 February 2023. The vicariate’s bishop, Luigi Padovese, was murdered in Iskenderun in 2010; today the vicariate is led by the Jesuit bishop Antuan İlgit.
