TarihçeHistory
Karşıyaka’daki ilk Katolik aileler 1880’de kayda geçti; 1882’de sayıları yirmiyi bulunca Başepiskopos Timoni, Don Valery’yi ilk rahip olarak atadı. O yıllarda cemaatin yalnızca derme çatma bir şapeli vardı.
Bugünkü kilisenin inşasına 1904’te Fransız mimar Raymond Charles Péré’nin tasarımıyla başlandı ve yaklaşık on yılda tamamlandı. Yapımına Sultan II. Abdülhamid’in fermanıyla izin verildi; bu belge 1926’da Türkiye Cumhuriyeti belgesine dönüştürüldü. Kilise, İmparator I. Konstantin’in annesi ve Kudüs’te Kutsal Haç’ı bulan Azize Helena’ya adanmıştır.
Bazilika planlı, üç nefli kilise, 19. yüzyılda moda olan yeni-gotik üsluptadır. Ana sunağın arkasında, taç giymiş ve Haç’ı tutan bir imparatoriçe olarak Azize Helena’nın tasviri vardır; sunağın iki yanında Aziz Yusuf ve İzmir’in koruyucu azizi Aziz Polikarp’ın heykelleri, yan sunaklarda Fatima Meryem Ana’sı ve İsa’nın Kutsal Kalbi’nin heykelleri bulunur.
Kilise 1951’de Kapuçin rahiplerine emanet edildi. 1979’da cemaat yaklaşık 90 aile ve 280 kişiden oluşuyordu; yarısından fazlası Türk vatandaşıydı. Azize Helena bugün Karşıyaka’daki tek etkin kilisedir ve Konventüel Fransisken bir rahip tarafından yönetilir.
The first Catholic families in Karşıyaka were recorded in 1880; in 1882, when they numbered twenty, Archbishop Timoni appointed Don Valery as their first priest. At that time the community had only a makeshift chapel.
Work on the present church began in 1904 to a design by the French architect Raymond Charles Péré and was completed in about ten years. Its construction was permitted by a firman of Sultan Abdülhamid II; in 1926 this document was converted into a document of the Republic of Turkey. The church is dedicated to St. Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine I, who found the Holy Cross in Jerusalem.
The basilica-plan, three-aisled church is in the neo-Gothic style fashionable in the 19th century. Behind the high altar is an image of St. Helena as an empress, crowned and holding the Cross; on either side of the altar are statues of St. Joseph and of St. Polycarp, patron saint of Izmir, and on the side altars are statues of Our Lady of Fatima and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The church was entrusted to the Capuchin friars in 1951. In 1979 the community numbered about 90 families and 280 people, more than half of them Turkish citizens. St. Helena is today the only active church in Karşıyaka and is run by a Conventual Franciscan priest.
