Bülbüldağı’nın yamacındaki Meryem Ana Evi, geleneğe göre Meryem Ana’nın hayatının son yıllarını Havari Yuhanna ile birlikte geçirdiği evdir. Yuhanna’nın Efes’te yaşadığı ve öldüğü eski kaynaklarda anlatılır; mezarının kalıntıları bugün Selçuk’taki Aziz Yuhanna Bazilikası’ndadır.

Evin yeri 19. yüzyılın sonunda, Alman mistik Anna Katharina Emmerich’in anlatılarından yola çıkan araştırmalarla belirlendi. 1891’de İzmir’deki Lazarist rahipler, Başepiskopos Andrea Timoni’nin desteğiyle yaptıkları arayışta bugünkü kalıntıları buldu. Eski temeller üzerinde yükselen küçük taş şapel restore edilerek ibadete açıldı.

Meryem Ana Evi hem Hristiyanlar hem de Meryem’i saygıyla anan Müslümanlar için önemli bir ziyaret yeridir. Papa VI. Pavlus (1967), II. Jean Paul (1979) ve XVI. Benedictus (2006) burayı ziyaret etti. Şapel bugün İzmir Başepiskoposluğu’na bağlı Kapuçin rahipleri tarafından hizmet görür; her yıl 15 Ağustos’ta Meryem Ana’nın Göğe Alınışı bayramı burada kutlanır.

The House of the Virgin Mary, on the slope of Bülbüldağı (Mount Koressos), is according to tradition the house where the Virgin Mary spent the last years of her life together with the Apostle John. Ancient sources tell that John lived and died in Ephesus; the remains of his tomb are today in the Basilica of St. John in Selçuk.

The site of the house was identified at the end of the 19th century through research based on the accounts of the German mystic Anne Catherine Emmerich. In 1891 the Lazarist priests of Izmir, in a search supported by Archbishop Andrea Timoni, found the present remains. The small stone chapel standing on the old foundations was restored and opened for worship.

The House of the Virgin Mary is an important place of pilgrimage both for Christians and for Muslims who revere Mary. Popes Paul VI (1967), John Paul II (1979) and Benedict XVI (2006) visited it. Today the chapel is served by Capuchin friars of the Archdiocese of Izmir; every year on 15 August the feast of the Assumption is celebrated here.
