TarihçeHistory
Saint Benoît, İstanbul’da hâlâ kullanılan en eski Katolik kiliselerinden biridir. Kökleri, 13. yüzyılın başındaki bir manastıra ve Cenevizlilerin 1362’de yaptırdığı çan kulesiyle birlikte Pera’daki Santa Maria della Cisterna manastırına dayanır. Bugün ayakta duran çan kulesi, bu 14. yüzyıl yapısıdır.
Yapı grubu 1427 ile 1450 arasında Fransız Benedikten rahiplerinin eline geçti ve Aziz Benedikt’e (Saint Benoît) adandı. Fetih sırasında kilisenin rölikleri ve dinî eşyaları önce Sakız Adası’na, sonra Ceneviz’e götürüldü. 17. ve 18. yüzyıllarda kilise Cizvitlerin elindeydi; 1783’te Fransız Lazarist rahiplerine devredildi.
Kilise 1686, 1696 ve 1731 yangınlarında zarar gördü ve girişindeki kitabede yazdığı gibi 1732’de bugünkü hâliyle yeniden yapıldı. Fransa elçisi Pierre de Girardin’in girişimiyle, o güne kadar yalnızca camilere tanınan bir ayrıcalıkla kubbeli olarak inşa edilmesine izin verildi; rivayete göre dönemin şeyhülislamı bugün hâlâ ayakta olan sütunları hediye etti.
Lazaristlerin 1783’te burada kurduğu okul, bugünkü Saint Benoît Fransız Lisesi’dir. Yerleşke 2000’li yıllarda kapsamlı bir restorasyondan geçti.
Saint Benoît is one of the oldest Catholic churches in Istanbul still in use. Its roots go back to a monastery of the early 13th century and to the monastery of Santa Maria della Cisterna in Pera, together with the bell tower the Genoese built in 1362. The bell tower that stands today is that 14th-century structure.
Between 1427 and 1450 the complex passed to French Benedictine monks and was dedicated to St. Benedict (Saint Benoît). At the time of the conquest, the church’s relics and liturgical objects were taken first to Chios and then to Genoa. In the 17th and 18th centuries the church belonged to the Jesuits; in 1783 it was handed over to the French Lazarist priests.
The church was damaged in the fires of 1686, 1696 and 1731 and, as the inscription at its entrance records, was rebuilt in its present form in 1732. Through the efforts of the French ambassador Pierre de Girardin, it was allowed to be built with a dome, a privilege until then granted only to mosques; according to tradition, the şeyhülislam of the day gave the columns that still stand today.
The school the Lazarists founded here in 1783 is today’s Saint Benoît French High School. The complex underwent an extensive restoration in the 2000s.
