TarihçeHistory

Sankt Georg’un adı ilk kez 1303’te geçer; kilisenin bir ayazmanın üzerine kurulduğu bilinir. İstanbul’un fethine kadar Galata’yı elinde tutan Cenevizlilerin merkez kilisesiydi. Bir inanışa göre İstanbul’un koruyucu azizelerinden Aziz İrini’nin başı bu ayazmaya atılmıştır.

Kilise 1628’de içinde küçük bir okul açılmasıyla bir yerleşkeye dönüştü; 1660 yangınında tamamen yandı. 1677’de Fransa elçisi Marki de Nointel, Sultan IV. Mehmed’den izin alarak kiliseyi yeniden yaptırdı. 1696 ve 1731 yangınlarından sonra, 1732’de kısmen Fransa Kralı XV. Louis’nin bağışlarıyla onarıldı.

Bir süre Avusturya-Macaristan denizcileri için hastane olarak da kullanılan yapı, 1882’de okuluyla birlikte Avusturyalı Lazaristler tarafından satın alındı. Bugünkü St. Georg Avusturya Lisesi’nin kökleri bu okula dayanır. Kilise 20. yüzyılın başında yenilendi, iç mekânı 1963’te sadeleştirildi; nefin ortasındaki kubbede Kutsal Ruh’u simgeleyen bir güvercin vardır.

Kilise bugün Almanca konuşan Katolik cemaatin kilisesidir ve Lazaristler ile Hayırsever Rahibeler’in (Barmherzige Schwestern) mirasını taşır. Rahibeler 150 yılı aşkın hizmetin ardından Eylül 2025’te İstanbul’dan ayrıldı.

Sankt Georg is first mentioned in 1303; the church is known to have been built over a holy spring (ayazma). It was the principal church of the Genoese, who held Galata until the conquest of Constantinople. According to one tradition, the head of St. Irene, one of the city’s patron saints, was thrown into this spring.

In 1628 the church became a compound, with a small school opened inside it; it burned down completely in the fire of 1660. In 1677 the French ambassador, the Marquis de Nointel, obtained permission from Sultan Mehmed IV and had the church rebuilt. After the fires of 1696 and 1731 it was repaired in 1732, partly with donations from King Louis XV of France.

The building, which for a time also served as a hospital for Austro-Hungarian sailors, was bought together with its school by the Austrian Lazarists in 1882. Today’s St. Georg Austrian High School has its roots in that school. The church was renovated at the beginning of the 20th century and its interior simplified in 1963; in the dome over the middle of the nave is a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit.

Today the church belongs to the German-speaking Catholic community and carries the legacy of the Lazarists and the Sisters of Mercy (Barmherzige Schwestern). The sisters left Istanbul in September 2025 after more than 150 years of service.
