Gün içinde, ayin saatleri dışında genellikle ziyarete açıktır. Kilise, İstiklal Caddesi’nden merdivenle inilen avlunun dibindedir.Usually open to visitors during the day, outside Mass times. The church stands at the far end of a courtyard reached by steps down from İstiklal Avenue.

TarihçeHistory

Santa Maria Draperis, İstanbul’un en eski Katolik cemaatlerinden birinin kilisesidir. Hikâyesi 1453’ten kısa süre önce Fransisken rahiplerin Sirkeci’de yaptığı Servili Aziz Antuan (Sant’Antonio dei Cipressi) kilisesiyle başlar. Fetihten sonra bu kiliseyi bırakmak zorunda kalan rahipler, uzun bir yer değiştirme döneminin ardından 1584’te Galata’ya yerleşti. Levanten bir hanım olan Clara Maria Draperis onlara küçük bir şapeli olan evini bağışladı; kilise adını bu bağışçıdan alır.

Şapelin sunağını, Meryem Ana’yı tasvir eden ahşap bir ikona süslüyordu. Şapel 1660 yangınında tamamen yandı, ikona ise Draperis ailesinden biri tarafından kurtarıldı. Cemaat 1678’de Pera’ya taşındı; bugünkü kilise 1767 yangınından sonra, 1769’da yeniden inşa edildi.

Üç nefli, dikdörtgen planlı kilisenin beşik tonozu 1874’te süslendi. Pembe Carrara mermerinden yüksek sunak 1772 tarihlidir ve Draperis ikonası hâlâ onun üzerindedir; ikona 25 Mart 1911’de papalık tacıyla taçlandırıldı. İstiklal Caddesi’ndeki girişte, bir nişin içinde Meryem heykeli bulunan neoklasik bir cephe vardır; 1904 tarihli yenilemenin kitabesi de buradadır. Kilisenin içinde, 18. ve 19. yüzyıldan kalma, çoğu İtalyanca ve Latince mezar taşları Levanten ailelerini, piskoposları ve konsolosları anar.

Kilise bugün de Küçük Kardeşler Fransiskenleri (OFM) tarafından yönetilir ve İtalyanca, İngilizce, Korece ve İspanyolca ayinlerle çok uluslu bir cemaate hizmet eder.

Santa Maria Draperis is the church of one of Istanbul’s oldest Catholic communities. Its story begins with the church of St. Anthony of the Cypresses (Sant’Antonio dei Cipressi), built by Franciscan friars in Sirkeci shortly before 1453. Forced to leave that church after the conquest, the friars settled in Galata in 1584 after a long period of moving from place to place. A Levantine lady, Clara Maria Draperis, gave them her house, which had a small chapel; the church takes its name from this benefactor.

The chapel’s altar was adorned with a wooden icon of the Virgin Mary. The chapel burned down completely in the fire of 1660, but the icon was rescued by a member of the Draperis family. The community moved to Pera in 1678; the present church was rebuilt in 1769, after the fire of 1767.

The barrel vault of the rectangular, three-aisled church was decorated in 1874. The high altar of pink Carrara marble dates from 1772, and the Draperis icon still stands above it; the icon was crowned with a papal crown on 25 March 1911. The entrance on İstiklal Avenue has a neoclassical façade with a statue of Mary in a niche, and the inscription of the 1904 renovation. Inside the church, gravestones from the 18th and 19th centuries, most in Italian and Latin, commemorate Levantine families, bishops and consuls.

The church is still run by the Friars Minor (OFM) and serves a multinational community with Masses in Italian, English, Korean and Spanish.
