TarihçeHistory

Alsancak’taki Kutsal Tespih Kilisesi, İzmir’deki Latin Katolik cemaatinin merkezlerinden biridir ve kuruluşundan beri Dominiken rahiplere bağlıdır. Ermeni Dominiken rahipleri 1718’de İzmir’e geldi ve 1755’te ilk evlerini, cemaat için de bir misafirhane açtı. 1813’ten itibaren İtalyan Dominikenler cemaate hizmet etmeye başladı.

1859’da Aziz Petrus ve Pavlus’a adanmış ilk kilise tamamlandı. Kutsal Tespih onuruna yapılacak yeni kilisenin temel taşı 4 Ekim 1903’te kondu ve kilise 1 Ekim 1904’te cemaate açıldı. 1922’deki büyük İzmir yangını çevredeki mahalleleri yok ederken kilise, cemaatin deyişiyle mucizevi bir şekilde, hiçbir zarar görmeden ayakta kaldı.

İkinci Vatikan Konsili’nin ardından, 1965’te sunak ve çevresi yeni litürjiye göre yenilendi. Ermeni Dominikenler İzmir’e gelirken en değerli emanetlerini de yanlarında getirmişti: bugün ABD’deki bir kilisede korunan Havari Yahuda Tadday’ın kolu, Longinus’un mızrağı olarak saygı gören bir emanet ve Tespihin Meryem Ana’sının gümüş bir heykeli. Rahipler bu heykeli, İzmir’deki ilk günlerinde onları Aziz Polikarp Kilisesi’nde ağırlayan Kapuçinlere minnet hediyesi olarak verdiler.

The Church of the Holy Rosary in Alsancak is one of the centers of the Latin Catholic community in Izmir and has been attached to the Dominican friars since its foundation. Armenian Dominican friars came to Izmir in 1718 and in 1755 opened their first house, together with a guesthouse for the community. From 1813 on, Italian Dominicans began to serve the community.

In 1859 the first church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, was completed. The foundation stone of a new church in honor of the Holy Rosary was laid on 4 October 1903, and the church opened to the community on 1 October 1904. When the great Izmir fire of 1922 destroyed the surrounding neighborhoods, the church, in the community’s words miraculously, remained standing without any damage.

After the Second Vatican Council, the altar and sanctuary were renewed in 1965 in line with the new liturgy. When the Armenian Dominicans came to Izmir they brought their most precious relics with them: the arm of the Apostle Jude Thaddeus, now kept in a church in the United States, a relic venerated as the lance of Longinus, and a silver statue of Our Lady of the Rosary. The friars gave this statue as a gift of thanks to the Capuchins, who had welcomed them at the Church of St. Polycarp in their first days in Izmir.
