Selçuk’taki bu küçük Katolik ibadet yeri, “Selçuk Katolik Kilisesi Derneği” adıyla kurulmuştur ve Efes’i ziyaret eden hacılar ile ilçede yaşayan Katolikler için pazar ayinleri düzenler. Kilise, Meryem Ana Evi ile aynı rahip topluluğu tarafından hizmet görür.
Selçuk, Havari Yuhanna’nın hayatının son yıllarını geçirdiği ve gömüldüğü yer olarak kabul edilir; Ayasuluk Tepesi’ndeki büyük Aziz Yuhanna Bazilikası’nın kalıntıları kilisenin yakınındadır. 431’deki Efes Konsili, Meryem’in “Tanrı’nın Annesi” (Theotokos) olduğunu burada ilan etmiştir.
This small Catholic place of worship in Selçuk was founded under the name “Selçuk Catholic Church Association” and holds Sunday Masses for pilgrims visiting Ephesus and for the Catholics living in the town. The church is served by the same community of priests as the House of the Virgin Mary.
Selçuk is held to be the place where the Apostle John spent the last years of his life and was buried; the remains of the great Basilica of St. John on Ayasuluk Hill are near the church. It was here, at the Council of Ephesus in 431, that Mary was proclaimed “Mother of God” (Theotokos).
