TarihçeHistory

Galata Kulesi’nin eteğindeki Sen Piyer ve Pol Kilisesi, Dominiken rahiplerinin kilisesidir. Dominikenler İstanbul’a 13. yüzyılın başında geldiler; Galata’daki ilk büyük kiliseleri San Paolo, 1475’te camiye çevrildi (bugünkü Arap Camii). Bunun ardından rahipler bugünkü yere yerleşti; burada 1604’te Cenevizliler tarafından bir kilise yapıldı.

Kilise 1660 ve 1731’de iki kez yangınla yıkıldı. Bugünkü yapı, İsviçreli-İtalyan Fossati kardeşler tarafından 1841–1843 yılları arasında neoklasik üslupta yeniden inşa edildi. Dar Galata sokaklarının arasında, dışarıdan pek fark edilmeyen bir avlunun içinde yer alır.

Kilisenin en değerli eseri, Hodegetria tipinde bir Meryem Ana ikonasıdır. İkona aslen Kırım’daki Kefe (Caffa) şehrinin Dominiken kilisesindeydi ve 1731 yangınından kurtuldu. Bugün manastır, Dominiken rahiplerin yürüttüğü “Dost-i” adlı bir araştırma ve diyalog merkezine de ev sahipliği yapar.

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul, at the foot of the Galata Tower, is the church of the Dominican friars. The Dominicans came to Constantinople at the beginning of the 13th century; their first large church in Galata, San Paolo, was turned into a mosque in 1475 (today’s Arap Mosque). After that the friars settled on the present site, where the Genoese built a church in 1604.

The church was destroyed by fire twice, in 1660 and 1731. The present building was rebuilt in the neoclassical style between 1841 and 1843 by the Swiss-Italian Fossati brothers. It stands inside a courtyard among the narrow streets of Galata, barely noticeable from outside.

The church’s most precious treasure is an icon of the Virgin of the Hodegetria type. The icon originally belonged to the Dominican church of Caffa (Kefe) in Crimea and survived the fire of 1731. Today the priory also houses a research and dialogue center called “Dost-i”, run by the Dominican friars.
