TarihçeHistory

Kutsal Ruh Katedrali, İstanbul Latin Katolik Havarisel Vekilliği’nin katedralidir; episkoposun makamı buradadır. Taksim ile Nişantaşı arasında, Notre Dame de Sion Lisesi’nin bitişiğinde yer alır ve Sent Antuan’dan sonra şehrin en büyük ikinci Katolik kilisesidir.

Barok üsluptaki bazilika, Havarisel Vekil Fransız başepiskopos Julien Hillereau’nun girişimiyle, mimar Gaspare Fossati tarafından 1846’da yapıldı. 1865 depreminde zarar gördü ve Pietro Vitalis tarafından yenilendi; 1876’da katedral oldu, 18 Mart 1909’da da küçük bazilika ilan edildi. Ana sunaktaki “Kutsal Ruh’un İnişi” tablosunu 1867’de Papa IX. Pius hediye etti.

Katedralin altındaki kriptada Başepiskopos Hillereau ile Osmanlı sarayının müzik şefi Giuseppe Donizetti (Donizetti Paşa) gömülüdür. Avludaki Papa XV. Benedictus heykeli 1921’de dikildi; Birinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında milliyet ve din ayırmadan yaralılara yardım eden papayı anar. Katedral 1989’dan beri Salezyen rahiplerine emanettir.

Papa VI. Pavlus, II. Jean Paul, XVI. Benedictus, Fransuva ve 28 Kasım 2025’te XIV. Leo, Türkiye ziyaretlerinde bu katedrale geldiler. Kilisenin yanındaki sokak, Papa XXIII. Yuhanna’nın anısına “Papa Roncalli Sokağı” adını taşır.

The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit is the cathedral of the Latin Catholic Apostolic Vicariate of Istanbul; the bishop’s seat is here. It stands between Taksim and Nişantaşı, next to the Notre Dame de Sion school, and is the city’s second largest Catholic church after Sent Antuan.

The Baroque basilica was built in 1846 by the architect Gaspare Fossati, on the initiative of the Apostolic Vicar, the French archbishop Julien Hillereau. Damaged in the earthquake of 1865, it was restored by Pietro Vitalis; it became a cathedral in 1876 and was made a minor basilica on 18 March 1909. The painting of “The Descent of the Holy Spirit” on the high altar was a gift of Pope Pius IX in 1867.

In the crypt beneath the cathedral lie Archbishop Hillereau and Giuseppe Donizetti (Donizetti Pasha), master of music at the Ottoman court. The statue of Pope Benedict XV in the courtyard was erected in 1921; it honors the pope who helped the wounded of the First World War without regard to nationality or religion. Since 1989 the cathedral has been in the care of the Salesian priests.

Popes Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Francis and, on 28 November 2025, Leo XIV came to this cathedral during their visits to Turkey. The street beside the church is named “Papa Roncalli Street” in memory of Pope John XXIII.
