Hz. Meryem’in eşi Aziz Yusuf’a adanan Surp Hovsep, Diyarbakır’ın Sur ilçesindeki tarihî Ermeni Katolik kilisesidir. 16. yüzyılda inşa edildiği bilinen kilise, Ermeni Katolik Kilisesi’nin 18. yüzyılda Roma ile tam birliğe girmesinin ardından bölgedeki Katolik Ermeni cemaatinin ibadet merkezi oldu.
Kadınlar mahfili bulunan ve düz bir damla örtülü kilisede Ermenice yazıtlar ile din görevlilerine ait mezar taşları vardır; yapının lojmanları ve bir avlusu bulunur. 20. yüzyılın ortalarından itibaren cemaat başka şehirlere ve yurt dışına göç edince kilise cemaatsiz kaldı.
2015–2016’daki Sur çatışmalarında en ağır hasar gören kiliselerden biri oldu. Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü’nün yürüttüğü restorasyon 2021’in başında tamamlandı. Aralık 2021’de Türkiye Ermeni Katolikleri Başepiskoposu Levon Zekiyan kiliseyi kutsadı ve burada yaklaşık 100 yıl sonra ilk ayin kutlandı. Aynı dönemde kilise, mimari özelliklerinin korunması ve cemaatin ayin hakkının saklı kalması şartıyla 10 yıllığına Dicle Üniversitesi’ne tahsis edildi.
Dedicated to St. Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary, Surp Hovsep is the historic Armenian Catholic church in Diyarbakır’s Sur district. Known to have been built in the 16th century, the church became the center of worship for the region’s Catholic Armenian community after the Armenian Catholic Church entered into full union with Rome in the 18th century.
The church, which has a women’s gallery and a flat roof, contains Armenian inscriptions and the gravestones of clergy; the building has living quarters and a courtyard. From the middle of the 20th century, as the community moved to other cities and abroad, the church was left without a congregation.
It was one of the churches most heavily damaged in the Sur clashes of 2015–2016. The restoration carried out by the General Directorate of Foundations was completed at the beginning of 2021. In December 2021 the Armenian Catholic Archbishop of Turkey, Levon Zekiyan, blessed the church, and the first Mass in about 100 years was celebrated here. In the same period the church was allocated to Dicle University for 10 years, on condition that its architectural features be preserved and the community’s right to celebrate Mass be kept.
