Tesbihin TarihiThe History of the Rosary

The History of the Rosary

Tesbih bir gecede ortaya çıkmamıştır. Kökü İncil’de, Cebrail meleğin Meryem’e verdiği selamda yatar. Bugünkü hâlini ise yüzyıllar içinde çöl keşişlerinin, okuma yazma bilmeyen köylülerin, azizlerin ve papaların elinde almıştır.The Rosary did not appear overnight. Its root lies in the Gospel, in the greeting the angel Gabriel gave to Mary. It took its present form over the centuries in the hands of desert monks, peasants who could not read, saints and popes.

1Adı nereden geliyor?Where does the name come from?

In Western languages the name comes from the Latin word rosarium, which means “rose garden” or “crown of roses”. Each Hail Mary is like a rose offered to the Virgin Mary; fifty roses make a crown.

The English word “bead” also comes from the old word “bede”, which meant “prayer”. So from the very beginning the bead has stood for the prayer itself. A rosary is neither a charm nor an ornament; the beads only help you count how many prayers you have said.

2Kökü İncil’deRooted in the Gospel

“Selam Sana Meryem” duasının ilk yarısı ise Cebrail’in ve Elizabet’in Meryem’e söylediği sözlerden oluşur.

Her dua Kutsal Kitap’ta nereden geliyor?

The Rosary is also called “the Bible on beads”, because every prayer in it either comes straight from Scripture or sums up what Scripture teaches. Jesus himself taught us the Our Father. The first half of the Hail Mary is made up of the words Gabriel and Elizabeth spoke to Mary.

Where does each prayer come from in the Bible?
  • The Apostles’ Creed: a short summary of what the Apostles taught. Its roots go back to the creed said by those being baptised in Rome in the 2nd century.
  • The Our Father: the prayer Jesus taught (Matthew 6:9-13).
  • The Hail Mary (first half): the words “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee” are Gabriel’s (Luke 1:28). The words “Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb” are Elizabeth’s (Luke 1:42). The names “Mary” and “Jesus” were added only to make clear who is meant.
  • “Holy Mary”: Scripture calls all believers “saints”, that is, holy ones (Ephesians 1:1). It is only natural that Mary, the first to receive Jesus, should be called holy.
  • “Mother of God”: a mother does not give birth to a “nature”; she gives birth to a “person”. The person Mary gave birth to is the Son of God, who took on a human nature. Elizabeth too calls her “the mother of my Lord” (Luke 1:43). The Church formally proclaimed this teaching in 431 at the Council of Ephesus, near today’s Selçuk in Turkey.
  • “Pray for us sinners”: Paul asks Christians to pray for one another (1 Timothy 2:1-4). Those in heaven also offer the prayers of the faithful to God (Revelation 5:8).
  • The Glory Be: a short hymn of praise to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).
  • The Hail Holy Queen: in David’s kingdom the queen was not the king’s wife but his mother; Solomon seated his mother at his right hand (1 Kings 2:19). Since Jesus is the King from David’s line, his mother is the queen.

One point should also be made clear: to “pray” does not always mean to “worship”; the word’s basic meaning is to “ask” or to “plead”. When we pray to the Virgin Mary we are not worshipping her. Just as we might ask a friend, “Will you pray for me?”, we ask her to pray to God on our behalf.

Kederli Gizemler:

Şanlı Gizemler:

Son iki gizem İncil’de doğrudan yer almaz; Kilise geleneğine dayanır ve Vahiy kitabındaki “güneşe bürünmüş, başında on iki yıldızdan bir taç olan kadın” tasviriyle birlikte değerlendirilir (Vahiy 12:1).

Böylece tesbih okuyan bir kişi, birkaç dakika içinde İsa’nın doğumundan dirilişine kadar tüm İncil’i gözden geçirmiş olur. Papa XII. Pius’un ifadesiyle tesbih, “bütün İncil’in özeti” niteliğindedir.

Jesus says, “When you are praying, speak not much, as the heathens” (Matthew 6:7). But what is forbidden here is not repetition itself; it is the repetition that does not come from the heart and thinks it can win over the gods by the sheer number of words. Scripture is full of repetition: in the garden of Gethsemane Jesus prayed three times with the same words (Matthew 26:44). In Psalm 136 the words “for his steadfast love endures for ever” are repeated twenty-six times. The angels say day and night without ceasing, “Holy, holy, holy” (Revelation 4:8).

What really matters is not the number of Hail Marys but the mysteries, that is, meditating deeply on the life of Jesus. Fr Chris Alar compares this to a film score: the music does not replace the film, but it lets you feel the scene more deeply. The Hail Marys of the Rosary are the music playing in the background; the film itself is the life of Jesus.

Twenty mysteries, twenty Gospel scenes

The Joyful Mysteries:

The Mysteries of Light:

The Sorrowful Mysteries:

The Glorious Mysteries:

The last two mysteries are not told directly in the Gospels; they rest on the Church’s tradition and are read together with the image in the Book of Revelation of “a woman clothed with the sun, and on her head a crown of twelve stars” (Revelation 12:1).

So in a few minutes, whoever prays the Rosary goes through the whole Gospel, from the birth of Jesus to his resurrection. In the words of Pope Pius XII, the Rosary is “a compendium of the entire Gospel”.

4Çakıl taşlarından boncuklaraFrom pebbles to beads

Manastırlarda keşişler her gün Mezmurlar kitabındaki 150 mezmuru okurlardı.

In the monasteries, monks prayed all 150 psalms of the Book of Psalms every day. But in those days there was no printing press; a handwritten book was worth a fortune, and most people could not read. Ordinary people who wanted to join the monks’ prayer therefore began to pray 150 Our Fathers in place of the 150 psalms. So as not to lose count, they carried a bag of pebbles and set one pebble aside with each prayer. Over time the pebbles gave way to knotted cords and beads.

Later the same practice began with 150 Hail Marys, and it came to be called “Mary’s Psalter”. Even today the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries each have 50 Hail Marys. Put the three together and you reach exactly 150, the number of the Psalms.

5Aziz DominikSt Dominic

At the beginning of the 13th century St Dominic was preaching in southern France to people caught up in the Albigensian heresy. Although he was a gifted preacher, his words reached the ears but did not touch the heart. According to tradition, in 1214 he withdrew to a forest near Toulouse and fasted and prayed for three days and three nights. When at last he collapsed from exhaustion, the Virgin Mary appeared to him and said:

“In this kind of warfare, the battering ram has always been the Angelic Salutation. Preach my Psalter.”

Joining each decade to a scene from the life of Jesus began, according to tradition, with Dominic. There is also a nice Latin pun on the name of the order he founded: “Domini canes”, “the hounds of the Lord”; in other words, the watchdogs that guard the flock from wolves.

Some historians hold that the story took its present form in the 15th century; indeed, no written record survives from Dominic’s own time. But the Church has honoured this tradition for centuries.

Another detail: at that time the Hail Mary had only its first half. The prayer ended with the words “...and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.” Matt Fradd suggests to Protestant friends who are drawn to the Rosary that, as in St Dominic’s day, they pray using only this first half, which rests entirely on Scripture.

6Unutuluş ve yeniden doğuşForgotten and reborn

After the Black Death swept across Europe in the 14th century, the Rosary began to be forgotten. In the 15th century the Dominican priest Blessed Alan de la Roche had the learning and the ability to spread this prayer, which would keep people from sin, but he was not doing it. It is said that one day at Mass, as he lifted up the Host, he was shaken by a voice he heard, and he set to work.

Alan spread the Rosary throughout Europe and in 1470 founded the first Rosary Confraternity. His work was so successful that people thought he had invented the Rosary. He answered, “No, this is Dominic’s prayer.” The well-known “15 Promises of the Rosary” also come from the private revelations Alan passed on. One of these promises reads: “The Rosary shall be a powerful armour against hell; it will destroy vice and decrease sin.”

7İnebahtı ve “Tesbih Meryem’i” bayramı (1571)Lepanto and the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (1571)

In the time of Pope Pius V, himself a Dominican friar, the Ottoman fleet was advancing across the Mediterranean. Spain, Venice and the Papal States joined together as the “Holy League”. The Pope called all Christians to pray the Rosary. Churches were kept open day and night, and the Pope himself joined barefoot prayer processions through the streets of Rome. On 7 October 1571 the Christian fleet defeated the Ottoman fleet at Lepanto. The Pope credited the victory to the intercession of the Virgin Mary and declared that day a feast. The Church still celebrates this feast every year on 7 October as “Our Lady of the Rosary”.

In 1569 Pius V fixed the form of the Rosary with its 15 mysteries. In 1568 he had also put the second half, ending “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death”, into the official prayer book. So a pope doubled the length of the Hail Mary.

8Dünyaya yayılan tesbihThe Rosary goes to the world

In the same century missionaries set out for the Americas, Asia and Africa. They could not carry thick volumes with them, but a single rosary in the pocket was enough to tell the whole life of Jesus. In this way “the Bible on beads” reached every corner of the world.

The Rosary also became the daily prayer of the saints. Teresa of Avila, Francis de Sales, John Bosco and Mother Teresa of Calcutta are only a few of them. Padre Pio called the Rosary “my weapon” and gave his spiritual children this advice: “Pray as many as you can.” Blessed Miguel Pro, shot by a firing squad in Mexico in 1927 for his faith, died with his arms stretched out like a cross, a crucifix in one hand and a rosary in the other, crying “Long live Christ the King!” The photograph of that moment still exists today.

9Okültten azizliğe: Bartolo LongoFrom the occult to sainthood: Bartolo Longo

Aziz II. Ioannes Paulus kendisini “tesbihin gerçek havarisi” olarak andı. Longo, 2025 yılında aziz ilan edildi.

One of the stories that best shows the power of the Rosary belongs to Bartolo Longo. Longo, who studied law in Naples in the 19th century, lost his faith during his university years; he took part in séances and went so far as to become a “priest” of an occult sect. In the end he was left alone with terrible nightmares, deep depression and thoughts of suicide.

A Dominican priest told him about the Rosary. Longo broke with the occult circles, and even went into a séance to call the people there to repentance. He gave his life to spreading the Rosary in the town of Pompeii. He built orphanages, schools and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii, today one of the best-known Rosary shrines in the world. St John Paul II called him “a true apostle of the Rosary”. Longo was canonised in 2025.

10Lourdes ve FatimaLourdes and Fatima

19. yüzyılda Papa XIII. Leo tesbih üzerine on bir genelge kaleme aldı ve Ekim ayını tesbih ayı ilan etti.

1858 yılında Lourdes’da 14 yaşındaki Bernadette, mağaranın önünde tek başına tesbih okurken Meryem Ana kendisine göründü. Meryem’in kolunda bir tesbih bulunuyordu. Bernadette dua ederken Meryem de boncukları parmaklarının arasından geçiriyor; ancak “Selam Sana Meryem” duasını söylemeyip yalnızca “Peder’e Şan” duasında kendisine eşlik ediyordu. Meryem toplam on sekiz kez göründü ve her görünüm tesbih duasıyla başladı.

In the 19th century Pope Leo XIII wrote eleven encyclicals on the Rosary and declared October the month of the Rosary.

In 1858 at Lourdes, fourteen-year-old Bernadette was praying the Rosary alone in front of the grotto when the Virgin Mary appeared to her. Mary had a rosary on her arm. As Bernadette prayed, Mary passed the beads through her fingers; but she did not say the Hail Mary, and joined her only in the Glory Be. Mary appeared eighteen times in all, and every apparition began with the Rosary.

In 1917 at Fatima she appeared to three shepherd children. The youngest of them, Jacinta, was only seven. Mary told them, “I am the Lady of the Rosary,” and asked that the Rosary be prayed every day for peace in the world. The “Fatima Prayer” said at the end of each decade (“O my Jesus, forgive us our sins...”) also comes from these apparitions.

11Aziz II. Ioannes Paulus ve Işık GizemleriSt John Paul II and the Luminous Mysteries

Karol Wojtyła sekiz yaşındayken annesini kaybetti. Anlatıldığına göre kiliseye giderek Meryem Ana’nın tasvirine bakıp “Artık sen benim annemsin” dedi. Papa olduğunda “Totus Tuus” (Tamamen Seninim) ilkesini benimsedi.

Karol Wojtyła lost his mother when he was eight. It is said that he went into the church, looked at an image of the Virgin Mary and said, “Now you are my mother.” When he became pope he took the motto “Totus Tuus” (Entirely Yours). Two weeks after his election he said, “The Rosary is my favourite prayer.”

On 13 May 1981, the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, he was shot in St Peter’s Square by Mehmet Ali Ağca. The bullets missed his vital organs by a very small margin. The Pope described what happened in these words: “One hand fired, and another guided the bullet.” Two years later he visited Ağca in prison and forgave him. That bullet is now set in the crown of the statue of Our Lady at Fatima.

In 2002 he added to the Rosary a fourth set of five new mysteries: the Luminous Mysteries. Fr Chris Alar sums up the reason this way: the Joyful Mysteries tell of Jesus’ birth, the Sorrowful Mysteries of his death, and the Glorious Mysteries of his resurrection. So what is missing? His life. The Luminous Mysteries fill that gap: Jesus’ baptism, the wedding at Cana, his proclamation of the Kingdom of God, his Transfiguration on the mountain and his institution of the Eucharist.

Nor was this an entirely new idea. In the 20th century the Maltese priest St George Preca had written a similar set called the “Mysteries of Light”. Still, the Luminous Mysteries are not an obligation but a proposal offered by the Pope.

12Tesbihin özüThe heart of the Rosary

Although its form has changed over the centuries, the heart of the Rosary has never changed: looking at Jesus through the eyes of the Virgin Mary. Could there be a better guide than Mary, who was beside Jesus at every moment, from the manger to the cross? And at the very centre of every Hail Mary there is always the same name: Jesus.

Gabriel Castillo suggests three simple steps:

  • Pause: before you begin to pray, stop for a few seconds and remember that God is present.
  • Picture it: bring the scene of the mystery before your eyes as if you were there. If you cannot picture it, look at an image or tell yourself what happened.
  • Talk: in that scene, talk to Jesus and Mary as it comes to you.

You do not have to finish the Rosary in one sitting. You can pray one decade in the morning, another on the road and another after a meal. If you told someone during the day, “I’ll pray for you”, you can remember that person in your evening Rosary; you can give each bead to a person.

13Ruhsal savaş: Şeytan “Selam Sana Meryem”den neden korkar?Spiritual warfare: why does the devil fear the Hail Mary?

Cebrail Meryem’e “Selam sana, lütuf dolu” diyerek seslendi. Kilise bu sözlerde, Tanrı’nın Meryem’i ana rahmine düştüğü ilk andan itibaren her türlü günahtan koruduğu ilkesini, yani Lekesiz Gebelik öğretisini görür. Aynı selamla melek, Tanrı’nın Oğlu’nun insan olacağını da müjdelemiştir. Şeytanın en büyük yenilgisi işte bu andır. Bu nedenle azizler ve şeytan çıkarma ayinlerini yürüten rahipler, şeytanın “Selam Sana Meryem” duasını duyduğunda titrediğini ifade ederler. Gururlu melek, kendisini alçakgönüllü genç bir kızın verdiği “Evet” yanıtının mağlup ettiğini hatırlamaya tahammül edemez.

Her gün kararlılıkla okunan tesbih, kişiyi Tanrı’nın lütfuna açar; zihni Mesih’in yaşamıyla dolan insan, günaha ve kötülüğe karşı direnç kazanır. Azimle dua eden kişi, Tanrı’nın lütfuyla karanlığı aydınlığa dönüştürür; o ışığın sonunda ise insanlığa yeni yaşamı sunan Yeni Âdem Mesih’i ve Yeni Havva Meryem’i görür.

Nihayetinde yaşanan süreç, iyi ile kötü arasındaki mücadeledir. Kötülük kaybetmemizi ister; bizler ise duayı asla bırakmamalıyız. Üstelik bu mücadelede yalnız kalmak zorunda değiliz. Peder Patrick Peyton’ın dünyaya yaydığı şu söz geçerliliğini korumaktadır: “Birlikte dua eden aile, birlikte kalır.”

Adım Adım Tesbih bölümünden dilediğiniz an başlayabilirsiniz.

The Rosary is not only a prayer that brings peace; it is a weapon in a spiritual battle that begins on the first pages of the Bible. After the disobedience of Adam and Eve, God says to the serpent: “I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel” (Genesis 3:15). In this verse, counted as the Protoevangelium (the first Gospel), the woman is in the first place Eve; but the Church Fathers see in her Mary, the “new Eve”, and in the woman’s offspring Jesus Christ.

In the Hebrew text the pronoun points to the woman’s offspring, that is, to Christ. In old Latin translations such as the Vulgate, however, the phrase is given with a feminine pronoun (ipsa conteret caput tuum: “she shall crush thy head”), and this became the basis of the traditional images of Mary crushing the serpent. In Catholic teaching Mary plays an indirect but active part in this victory: she shares in salvation through the “yes” she gave to the Incarnation and through her suffering at the cross. The serpent “lying in wait for the heel” stands for Jesus’ death on the cross; but while the devil thought he had wounded Christ, it was by that very death on the cross that Jesus crushed the serpent’s head.

In the last book of the Bible, Revelation, the story closes with the dragon’s war against the woman (Revelation 12).

Gabriel greeted Mary with the words “Hail, full of grace.” In these words the Church sees the teaching that God kept Mary free from every sin from the first moment she was conceived in her mother’s womb, that is, the Immaculate Conception. With the same greeting the angel also announced that the Son of God would become man. That moment is the devil’s greatest defeat. This is why saints and the priests who perform exorcisms say that the devil trembles when he hears the Hail Mary. The proud angel cannot bear to be reminded that he was defeated by the “yes” of a humble young girl.

The Rosary, prayed faithfully every day, opens a person to God’s grace; a person whose mind is filled with the life of Christ grows strong against sin and evil. But one thing should also be known: at the beginning it can feel as if the attacks are growing rather than lessening. Restlessness, reluctance, an inner voice saying “Give it up, what’s the point?”... This is because the devil does not give up easily; he resists. Even if things seem to be getting worse, do not stop praying; keep going with even greater resolve. Whoever prays with perseverance turns darkness into light by God’s grace; and at the end of that light they see Christ, the New Adam, and Mary, the New Eve, who offer new life to humanity.

In the end, what we are living through is the struggle between good and evil. Evil wants us to lose; we must never give up prayer. And we do not have to face this struggle alone. The words Fr Patrick Peyton spread around the world still hold true: “The family that prays together stays together.”
